Unit description
This unit includes two modules: an advanced musculoskeletal physiotherapy module and an advanced clinical reasoning module addressing complex patient-centred health care in society. In the musculoskeletal module, students will develop advanced manual therapy skills. In the advanced clinical reasoning module, students will develop skills in the assessment and management planning for patients with multisystem or complex problems. In this unit students will build on and integrate material from their clinical placements, the core areas of musculoskeletal, cardiorespiratory and neurological physiotherapy as well as foundation sciences. Additionally, students will identify their dissertation topic for the final two semesters of the program.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:
- Design and conduct an assessment of people with complex musculoskeletal problems or people with problems across multiple systems.
- Demonstrate advanced clinical reasoning to interpret and analyse complex assessment findings to form a diagnosis and prioritised list of problems in impairments, activity limitations and participation restriction.
- Demonstrate advanced clinical reasoning abilities to develop a physiotherapy intervention plan for complex musculoskeletal and/or multisystem problems that addresses the individual’s goals and is based on best evidence.
- Demonstrate safe and effective physiotherapy interventions used to treat complex musculoskeletal problems or people with problems across multiple systems.
- Perform advanced manual therapy techniques with safety and competence.
- Determine a plan of monitoring and evaluation that uses appropriate outcome measures during the assessment and treatment of complex musculoskeletal problems or people with problems across multiple systems.
- Identify and justify an individual dissertation topic that will be further developed in PHTY 819 Advanced Research Training and completed in PHTY821 Dissertation and Seminar.

Skills based practical exam on advanced manual therapy techniques

Written report

Weighting: 30%
Report requires students to reflect, identify and justify their selection of dissertation topic area
On successful completion you will be able to:
- Identify and justify an individual dissertation topic that will be further developed in PHTY 819 Advanced Research Training and completed in PHTY821 Dissertation and Seminar.
Viva exam
Due: End of semester exam period
Weighting: 40%
Based on complex cases provided prior to the viva exam, students will be required to describe and justify evidence based assessment and treatment choices at an advanced level
On successful completion you will be able to:
- Design and conduct an assessment of people with complex musculoskeletal problems or people with problems across multiple systems.
- Demonstrate advanced clinical reasoning to interpret and analyse complex assessment findings to form a diagnosis and prioritised list of problems in impairments, activity limitations and participation restriction.
- Demonstrate advanced clinical reasoning abilities to develop a physiotherapy intervention plan for complex musculoskeletal and/or multisystem problems that addresses the individual’s goals and is based on best evidence.
- Demonstrate safe and effective physiotherapy interventions used to treat complex musculoskeletal problems or people with problems across multiple systems.

Delivery and Resources
Technology and equipment
Teaching rooms are equipped with state of art audio-visual and ICT equipment including 1 laptop per 2 students, ipads, internet connection, high quality video cameras and multiple LCD screens.
Videos of many of the assessment and treatment skills will be available on the ilearn site.
Assessment/Standards
Details for each assessment task will be available on ilearn.
Marking rubrix for all 3 pieces of assessment will be available on ilearn.
To pass this unit students must complete all assessments and receive a total mark of 50% or more.
Consultation with staff: All staff will be available for individual consultation. See ilearn for contact details and times.
Teaching and Learning strategy: Lectures will provide foundation knowledge and also use large group demonstrations and discussion. Tutorials will focus on developing technical skills and clinical decision making.
