Unit description
This unit provides students with the opportunity to acquire a deeper understanding of Japan through research on a particular subject. After choosing a research topic in consultation with the unit convenor, students undertake a 5000–6000 word research paper. Within the framework of Japanese studies, research topics can be chosen from a wide spectrum of Japan related fields including: Japanese language; culture; history; economics; politics; social and contemporary issues; and international relations involving Japan. Japanese native speakers may enrol in this unit.

Students are required to submit the research paper abstract (300 words), research action plan (300 words) and annotated bibliography (minimum 20 relevant, appropriate sources).

Students are required to submit a complete draft of the fully and correctly referenced research paper.
Due: Week 12
Weighting: 10%
Students are required to give a 10-minute presentation on the research paper.
Due: 5pm Fri 14 Nov (Week 13)
Weighting: 40%
Students are required to revise the research paper draft, based on the feedback provided, and submit the final research paper of 5,000-6,000 words.
This unit will be conducted through individual consultations, commencing in Week 1. In Week 1, the unit convenor will contact students to schedule regular meetings. Individual meetings are compulsory and students must allocate time to meet with the convenor on a regular basis for the duration of the semester.
This is a research unit and students are required to independently identify and locate relevant and appropriate resources.

Students are required to have regular, reliable access to a computer and the internet. Mobile devices alone are not sufficient.

Assessment tasks are compulsory and must be submitted on time. Extensions will not be granted without a valid and documented reason (e.g. medical certificate). Late submissions will be penalised by 5% for each day (including weekends) the assessment task is late. No assessment tasks will be accepted after assessment tasks have been corrected and feedback has been provided. Assessment tasks handed in early will not be marked and returned before the due date.
If a student is prevented by serious and unavoidable disruption from completing unit requirements in accordance with their ability, they may apply for support under the Disruption to Studies Policy.
