Unit description Unit description
In this unit, disorders of articulation, phonology and swallowing that occur developmentally or through acquired disorders will be presented. The focus will be on assessment and treatment planning and implementation for speech disorders in both children and adults in relation to articulation and phonological disorders and dysphagia.

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • understanding of developmental, and acquired pathological conditions of neurological and mechanical origin which impair speech production and swallowing
  • ability to select, administer, and interpret results of assessment procedures, specifically oromusculature assessment, speech sampling, instrumental and perceptual assessments related to disorders of respiration, phonation, resonance, articulation and prosody
  • knowledge of the range of assessment procedures available for swallowing disorders, and their associated risks and benefits
  • ability to select and interpret results of baseline measures that are sensitive to change in behaviour over time
  • knowledge of evidence based treatments for disorders of respiration, phonation, resonance, articulation, prosody, and swallowing

This unit is delivered in 3 sections, which cover developmental speech disorders, acquired speech disorders, and dysphagia in adults and children.
