Unit description Unit description
This unit is an introduction to classical Hebrew for students who have not previously studied Biblical Hebrew. This unit provides students with an introduction to the Hebrew alphabet, and to the grammar and vocabulary of Biblical Hebrew, in preparation for the study of a number of biblical texts.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • i) Recognize and recall ancient Hebrew script and phonetic structure
  • ii) Identify and recall Hebrew grammatical structures at elementary level
  • iii) Recognize and memorize foundational Hebrew vocabulary
  • iv) Assess the grammar required for the translation of simple Hebrew texts
  • v) Explore relevant grammatical and lexical reference tools
  • vi) Recognize and recall linguistic metalanguage
  • vii) Integrate knowledge of grammar and vocabulary in reading and/or writing simple Hebrew texts
  • viii) Explore the significance of Hebrew for the study of relevant ancient cultures

General Assessment Information

Each assessment task will be judged by the number of actual correct answers expressed as a percentage of possible correct answers.

The grades are as follow: High distinction ≥ 85%; Distinction ≥ 75%; Credit ≥ 65%; and Pass ≥ 50%

To successfully complete the unit the student will need to gain a Pass or better.

Vocabulary and class tests will be collected during the lesson. The final examination will be held in the exam period at the end of term and will be centrally administered. If a student is unable to attend or complete an in-class assessment task, (s)he should show cause why and speak to the tutor to determine whether an alternate time should be arranged to sit the test.

Short quizzes to be held at the beginning of the class over a 10 week period starting in week 3.

Grammar building

Due: Week 6 and week 12
Weighting: 40%

Two class tests of 45 minutes which seek to assess the student's knowledge of Hebrew grammar covered in up to week 6 and week 12 respectively.


On successful completion you will be able to:

  • iii) Recognize and memorize foundational Hebrew vocabulary
  • iv) Assess the grammar required for the translation of simple Hebrew texts
  • v) Explore relevant grammatical and lexical reference tools

  • vii) Integrate knowledge of grammar and vocabulary in reading and/or writing simple Hebrew texts
  • viii) Explore the significance of Hebrew for the study of relevant ancient cultures

Final Examination

Due: Examination period
Weighting: 40%

A two hour examination which will test the student's knowledge of Hebrew grammar and vocabulary. To prepare the student is strongly advised to reread the chapters of the textbook covered in class, as well as all course notes and handouts given during the semester. The student can take the course textbook, Jo Ann Hackett, A Basic Introduction to Biblical Hebrew, into the examination. In the last week of semester the tutor will speak to the class about the format of the examination.

Delivery and Resources

Three hours of face-to-face teaching is scheduled throughout the semester. One of the three hours will be used for revision and reinforcement of what has taught.

The text to be used is Jo Ann Hackett, A Basic Introduction to Biblical Hebrew.

iLearn will be set up to allow discussion and to provide extra learning material when required.
