Unit description Unit description
Learn how to produce, improve and demonstrate your creative imagination, reasoning and skills through an appreciation of texts (literary, music/sound, film, performative, theoretical) using critical reflection and analytic tools. This unit will provide opportunities for critical reflection and/or creative production relevant to specific disciplinary areas.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge of the literature in their field as it applies to the students' research topic.
  • Evaluate, synthesise and analyse various texts (music, media, literary, theoretical) and scholarly literature appropriate to their research topic.
  • Analyse and evaluate the arguments of others and revise and develop students’ own ideas and arguments in relation to the scholarly work in their field of knowledge.
  • Communicate (either performative or oral, and written) a clear and coherent exposition of the theoretical and analytical knowledge and methods in their field of research.
  • Apply knowledge and theories to new contexts and multiple media.
  • Produce multi-modal creative work relevant to students' disciplines.

Research Proposal

Due: Friday August 21st
Weighting: 20%

This is a unit in which you can choose a special topic in your  particular area of  research interest. 

Your research proposal (1500 words or equivalent) should outline your  topic,  situate it within current inquiry in its field, outline  your proposed approach and summarise key references. 

Your  special  topic may be investigated through creative practice and/or production, critical writing or a combination of both. 

 This asignment will be discussed in specialist seminars with convenors. More information on particular production and research streams, and on assignment submission will be provided on ilearn. 


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge of the literature in their field as it applies to the students' research topic.
  • Evaluate, synthesise and analyse various texts (music, media, literary, theoretical) and scholarly literature appropriate to their research topic.
  • Analyse and evaluate the arguments of others and revise and develop students’ own ideas and arguments in relation to the scholarly work in their field of knowledge.
  • Communicate (either performative or oral, and written) a clear and coherent exposition of the theoretical and analytical knowledge and methods in their field of research.

Progress Report

Due: Friday 2nd October
Weighting: 35%

This  assignment   (2000 words or equivalent) should summarise your work-in-progress on your Special Topic Research. 

It should present your major findings to date,  key references, your plans for completion, critically reflect on any obstacles or difficulties you have encountered and how you have dealt with them. 

The Report may take the form of creative writing and/or production, critical writing or a combination of both. 

Multimodal texts (incorporating words, images and sound as appropriate) are encouraged. 

This assignment will be discussed in seminars and more information will be available on ilearn. 

 


On successful completion you will be able to:

Research Project

Due: Monday 9th November
Weighting: 45%

This is the project you create in your particular area of interest. The project may take the form of creative practice and/or production, critical writing or a combination of both. 

This assignment will be discussed in seminars by convenors in your production or research stream, and more information on assignment submission will be available on ilearn.

  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge of the literature in their field as it applies to the students' research topic.
  • Analyse and evaluate the arguments of others and revise and develop students’ own ideas and arguments in relation to the scholarly work in their field of knowledge.
  • Communicate (either performative or oral, and written) a clear and coherent exposition of the theoretical and analytical knowledge and methods in their field of research.

  • Produce multi-modal creative work relevant to students' disciplines.

Research and Practice

The unit is designed to increase your understanding of critical inquiry and creative practice perspectives, and to develop and effectively communicate your own research. 

Teaching and Learning Strategy

You are expected to complete all pre- class preparation, such as readings, in advance. 

Students are expected to make themselves available for  consultation with the Convenor.

Reading material will be provided by the Convenor in a separate schedule of unit content guide. 

Technologies

Some aspects of this unit may require creative technologies such as media production or musical interests.

Students will be directed to production resources within MMCCS where appropriate.
