Unit description Unit description
This unit involves the conduct of research appropriate to the subspecialisation of the student. Students are required to submit a collection of peer reviewed journal articles (minimum of two) based on research undertaken during the candidate’s enrolment at Macquarie University. This collection will also include an introductory statement and a discussion document that situates the papers within the wider context of the research discipline. Through this unit the student will gain essential research skills to support an academic career.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • Plan and conduct an original research project, including reviews of relevant literature
  • Integrate analysis and synthesis of literature into project design and execution
  • Demonstrate competence in researching in chosen field and methodology
  • Demonstrate ability to write in relevant academic genres, including the preparation of articles for publication
  • Evaluate the research process to enhance future research strategies

Due: First month of enrolment
Weighting: 10%

A 2 page plan for research; to be submitted within the first month of enrolment.


On successful completion you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate competence in researching in chosen field and methodology

Research thesis introduction

Due: TBA with supervisor
Weighting: 20%

An introductory statement for the research publications.


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Plan and conduct an original research project, including reviews of relevant literature
  • Integrate analysis and synthesis of literature into project design and execution
  • Demonstrate competence in researching in chosen field and methodology
  • Demonstrate ability to write in relevant academic genres, including the preparation of articles for publication
  • Evaluate the research process to enhance future research strategies

Research thesis publications

Due: TBA with supervisor
Weighting: 60%

At least two peer-reviewed publications as well as a concluding discussion.

This consists of publications from research across the period of enrolment in the degree, particularly in the final year.


On successful completion you will be able to:

  • Integrate analysis and synthesis of literature into project design and execution
  • Demonstrate competence in researching in chosen field and methodology
  • Demonstrate ability to write in relevant academic genres, including the preparation of articles for publication

Seminar presentation

Due: TBA with supervisor
Weighting: 10%

Presentation at departmental seminar.


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Evaluate the research process to enhance future research strategies

Delivery and Resources

Please liaise with your clinical supervisor about your one-to-one research supervision. Technological requirements for your research will be identified by your supervisor. You may also connect with the ASAM liaison librarians to assist you in your project. 

Unit Schedule

As this is a research project, you will liaise with your clinical supervisor to work out a research schedule and assessment timetabling.
