Unit description
This unit extends students' grasp of Biblical Hebrew by working through the second half of the grammar book. Students also read a prose text from the Hebrew Bible.

The grade a student receives will signify their overall performance in meeting the learning outcomes of a unit of study. Grades will not be awarded by reference to the achievement of other students nor allocated to fit a predetermined distribution. In determining a grade, due weight will be given to the learning outcomes and level of a unit (ie 100, 200, 300, 800 etc). Graded units will use the following grades:
HD High Distinction 85-100
D Distinction 75-84
Cr Credit 65-74
P Pass 50-64
F Fail 0-49

Students will be tested on a weekly basis on the vocabulary and grammar needed for that week. There will also be short homework exercises that will count towards the student's final grade.

Students are expected to attend class and to participate in class discussions and tasks, as well as complete set homework tasks (10%).
Students are required to make at least ONE contribution to the online wiki, and to make at least ONE response to another student's contribution (or the lecturer's) (10%).
The Wiki is focused on exploring the continued cultural and scholarly relevance of Ancient Hebrew in the modern day. Recent scientific or archaeological findings that have been in the news, references to Hebrew in popular culture, or even current research on the benefits of learning a language would be appropriate topics for a student's contribution to the Wiki. The contribution can be in the form of a brief (approximately 500 words) journal entry, or a link to a YouTube video, TED talk, or recent news item. The Wiki is aimed at helping to build a learning community in the class, and also connecting what we learn in class to broader social and cultural environments.
Students are required to observe good netiquette on the wiki.
There will be revision in Weeks 1 and 2 of grammar learned in semester 1. Students will then spend two hours a week working through the second half of Jo Ann Hackett's textbook: A Basic Introduction to Biblical Hebrew.
Students will also spend 1-2 hours a week in class reading and analysing excerpts from the Book of Judges and Samuel.
There are no tutorials in Week 1.
