Unit description Unit description
By conducting individual action research projects, students will be guided to explore translation and interpreting related areas from multiple perspectives and to conduct systematic inquiry of their own translation or interpreting practice. Students will be required to identify problems they have experienced in skill development, gather and analyse data, design a plan of action and implement the plan for the sake of improving their skills (sense, read, match, act). Students will conduct a reflective individual action research project, based on critical readings, classroom and/or online discussions, and feedback from lecturers.

General Assessment Information

Research Project 1. Students will present their revised literature review, basic methodology and collection of data as the first part of their research project. (1500 words). Due Week 8. 40%

On successful completion you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate critical analysis of translation or interpreting problems.
  • Discuss and analyse findings of translation or interpreting research.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of research methodology and apply it in an extended research project.

Research Report.

Due: Week 13
Weighting: 60%

The final paper should be approximately 5,000 words and should be structured as follows:

Introduction (what are you looking at? What problem did you sense in your own interpreting/translating practice?)

Literature review (who else has talked about what you are looking at and how is it relevant?)

Methodology (how did you read the problem - what is your data and how did you collect and analyse it?)

Results (summary of analysis with examples from data)

Discussion (what did you find and what is significant about it? How will you match the problem?)

Implications and recommendations

Conclusion (summarise what you’ve talked about & what you found, and any other problems you have sensed for future research).  

Word counts should be approximately as follows:

Introduction – 500 words

Literature review – 1,000-1,500 words

Methodology – 500-1,000 words

Results – 1,000 words

Discussion – 1,000 words

Conclusion – 500 words  

Assessment criteria:

 

The research report and research project will be assessed against the following criteria:

 

Clear and specific idea (5%)

Well-developed reflections on personal  practice (20%)

Adequate data and in-depth analysis (20%)

Arguments are well supported with relevant literature (20%)

Appropriate use of citations (5%)

Report is clearly organized (5%)

Report is well written and grammatical (5%)

Demonstrates originality and/or creativity (10%)

Reflections lead to recommendations (10%)
