Unit description
This unit provides students with opportunities to further practice techniques involved in translating texts from a wide range of genres, including the most up-to-date texts, catering for student needs regarding areas on-demand in translation markets. Students will explore different strategies for handling complex tasks undertaken by advanced translators, and their abilities to work as a team member and reviewer will also be further strengthened.

Students will be required to translate several texts on varying topics from English into their LOTE.

Students will be required to translate two longer texts, one into English from their LOTE and one into their LOTE from English. Students will work in groups and be responsible for all aspects of creating a professional translation.

Students will complete two translation tasks, one into English from their LOTE and one into their LOTE from English, under examination conditions. The exam is computer-based and students are allowed to use any resources that they need including Internet and their own laptop computer.
Each language group has one 3-hour face-to-face class every week, focuses on translation from English into LOTE and from LOTE into English. This unit uses authentic texts such as IT white papers, financial reports, medical journals, and tourist brochures. Students will translate texts that total 30,000 words approximately.
This unit also provides opportunities for students to develop generic skills that are required of professional translators. It is expected that students in this unit will actively participate in various activities designed in this unit and develop their own professional tools.
