Unit description Unit description
This unit aims to increase students' ability to recognise, describe, evaluate, analyse, design and develop information systems from a business professional's viewpoint. The focus is on the creation of business value by improving business processes through the use of information and communications technologies (ICTs). Achievement of the unit's objectives will enable students to play an effective part in information development, management and use, and to communicate effectively with ICT professionals. This unit enables students to gain an understanding of the implications and impacts of the web revolution based on the basic principles of management information systems.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • Explain why the business value of information technology is determined by people, hardware, software, data and procedures and describe the key trends of Information and Communications Technology and the implications for individuals, organisations and society.
  • Describe how information technology supports business processes (including the risks and benefits of cloud computing, e-business, m-commerce, social computing and outsourcing) and compare and contrast decisions about project management and systems development including the factors that influence management decisions.
  • Explain how enterprise content management and electronic records reduce cost, support business operations and assist organisations to meet their regulatory, legal, governance and ethical obligations.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the impacts of constant connectivity and distractions on quality of life, customer service and business operations, privacy and security and interpersonal relationships.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to working in a team and contribute to achieve the goals of the task at hand.

Assessed Coursework

Due: Weeks 3 - 12 during tutorials
Weighting: 30%

Submission:

1.1) In-class Activities and Presentations - 25%

Each week students will participate in a task allocated in their tutorial. Tasks are undertaken and marked in tutorials. Students will work in groups of NO MORE THAN FIVE (5) students each. All tutorial tasks will be assessed except tutorial tasks on Weeks 2, 7, 8, and 13. However, in Week 7, students will undergo a reflective exercise worth 5% during the tutorial (see 1.2 for more details). Students are expected to attend all tutorials and participate in all tasks.

Although EIGHT (8) tutorial tasks will be assessed, not all groups will be asked to present their work each week. In total, FIVE (5) random assessed coursework submissions will be assessed for each group during the semester. The tutor will determine which weeks’ work will be marked for each group. This assessment task is worth 25%, out of which 12.5% will be comprised of the mark received for the group participation, while the additional 12.5% will be comprised of the mark received for the individual presentation of the assessed task. A mark of zero (0) will be given if students are unable to participate in the tutorials.

1.2) Reflective Task - 5%

Reflection is a powerful process of analysis and interpretation that helps us learn from our experiences. Reflecting on your life, work, and education will impact the performance and success of your education. A reflective task is to be completed by students in Week 7 tutorial contributing 5% of their overall grade for the unit. The reflective task will cover lecture and tutorial materials from Week 1 to Week 6 (including the guest speaker’s presentation). Hence, students are required to review all learning materials up until Week 6 as well as to take notes at the guest speaker’s presentation during Week 6 lecture (more details available on iLearn).

Extension:

No extensions will be granted (not applicable as undertaken in class). Students that do not attend class will be awarded a mark of ZERO (0) for the task, except for cases in which an application for Disruption to Studies (DTS) is made and approved.

Report

Due: Week 7 (16th of September)
Weighting: 20%

Submission:

The assessment task is to write an individual Business Report with 2,000-2,500 words (including Introduction and Conclusion) using scholarly references. The Business Report will address a topic on Information and Communications Technology (ICT) (full details available on iLearn). The unit convenor will release the business report topic on iLearn on week 3. The report must be submitted through the Turnitin Assignment link in iLearn by Friday, 16th of September at 5:00pm AEST (week 7).

This assessment task will be required to have an Originality Report, which will be done through the software program Turnitin. For more information go to: http://www.mq.edu.au/iLearn/student_info/assignments.htm. Tutors will check the originality reports before commencing marking. All reports will be marked through Gradebook (the online marking system). Students will receive feedback within two weeks of the report submission.

It is the responsibility of the student to retain a copy of any work submitted. Students must produce these documents upon request. Copies should be retained until the end of the grade appeal period each term. In the event that a student is asked to produce another copy of work submitted and is unable to do so, they may be awarded zero (0) for that particular assessment task.

Extension:

Tasks above 10% - No extensions will be granted. There will be a deduction of 10% of the total available marks made from the total awarded mark for each 24 hour period or part thereof that the submission is late (for example, 25 hours late in submission – 20% penalty). This penalty does not apply for cases in which an application for Disruption of Studies (DTS) is made and approved.

Three (3) hour exam plus 10 minutes reading time.

Supplementary Exams:

If a Supplementary Examination is granted as a result of the Disruption to Studies Policy the examination will be scheduled as per the Supplementary Examination timetable of the Faculty. Please note that the supplementary examination will be of the similar format as the final examination.

Delivery and Resources

Classes

This unit will be taught in the form of weekly lectures and tutorials. There is a one and a half-hour lecture on Wednesdays for 13 weeks. There are one and a half-hour tutorials each week for 12 weeks starting on Week 2. The timetable for classes can be found on the University web site at: https://timetables.mq.edu.au.

  • Each student must register for a tutorial and must attend the tutorial that he/she has registered for. Tutorials will run each week from Weeks 2 to 13. Students must finalise their tutorial enrolment by the end of Week 2.
  • Tutorial changes can ONLY be made through eStudent. Students wishing to change tutorial times should log onto eStudent and enrol in a class where there is a vacancy.
  • Lecture slides will be made available on the unit website prior to the lecture.
  • Lecture recordings will be made available via iLecture after the lecture each week.

Research and Practice

This unit provides students with practice applying research findings in assessment tasks. All assessment tasks require students to support their assertions with quality scholarly articles. Students will also be encouraged to link research with current industry practice.

The required text for this unit is: Turban E, Volonino, L and Wood, G (2015) Information Technology for Management: Digital Strategies for Insight, Action, and Sustainable Performance 10th Edition, John Wiley & Sons (ISBN 978-1-118-89778-2). Available at the Co-op Bookshop (Macquarie University) or at wiley.com.

Students will also be required to source the following online material from e-reserve:

In addition to Turban, Volonino and Wood (2015), you are expected to draw on literature from other sources (including magazines, newspapers, business reports, journals, etc.). In the case of research journals, you can search journals and explore the main catalogue or look up databases relevant to Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and/or management. The journals of particular interest include the following (to name a few):

Course material is available on the unit website (http://ilearn.mq.edu.au) - please note this includes the use of Turnitin. Other technology includes access to the internet to utilise library resources and the use of applications such as word processing software for assignments. 

Expectations and Workload

To complete the unit satisfactorily students must make a serious attempt for each assessment task. Students are expected to spend 150 hours working on this unit. As a guide a student should spend these approximate amounts of time on each of the following activities:

Changes from Previous Offering

Assessed Coursework - Students are required to take part in group discussions (12.5%) and make an individual presentation as part of their group’s work (12.5%) in tutorials. All group members must take part in the presentations. Additionally, a Reflective Task worth 5% has been added as part of the Assessment Tasks.
