Unit description Unit description
This continuing EFL unit is designed to further develop skills in reading, comprehension, speaking and writing for students from non-English speaking backgrounds. The unit covers fundamental areas of structural properties of the English language and aspects of its variation and change, analysis of the language in use and the application of English-language communication skills. The unit is taught in blended mode with a strong online component and a range of assessment focusing on meaningful tasks and gaining an appreciation of the English language in a range of settings including Australian academic and professional contexts.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

General Assessment Information

Submission of most tasks is via iLearn. All assessment tasks are compulsory and must be submitted on time. As a general rule, extensions will not be granted without a valid and documented reason (e.g. medical certificate). Late submissions will be penalised by 5% for each day (including weekends) the assignment task is late. No assignments will be accepted after assignments have been corrected and feedback has been provided. Assignment tasks handed in early will not be marked and returned before the due date. Detailed grading standards and indicative examples of tasks are provided in the unit iLearn site.

Data commentary

A written task to assess skills in understanding data presented in tables or figures, describing data, and discussing research findings.

Independent learning portfolio

Due: Weeks 7 and 13
Weighting: 15%

An independent learning plan and portfolio to demonstrate regular language practice at appropriate levels outside classroom.

  • Show engagement in independent learning activities.

Report writing

Due: Week 9
Weighting: 30%

A written task to assess skills in report writing and ability to investigate an issue and provide recommendations. 


On successful completion you will be able to:

  • Acquire knowledge needed to interpret and produce English text types encountered in Australian academic and social settings.
  • Analyse English text types encountered and/or produced in Australian academic and social settings.

Oral presentation

Due: Week 12
Weighting: 20%

An oral presentation to assess presentation skills in academic settings.
