Unit description Unit description
This unit examines narrative forms and processes in a selected range of manga and anime productions. Special attention will be paid to: manga story structure, visual techniques and codes, telling and retelling stories, character types and functions, the production of subjectivities in 'manga' and 'anime' social worlds, diversifying media types and spin-offs.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • Consolidate a deep knowledge basis for the study of forms, conventions and generic types of manga/anime and relate these to their cultural, social and political significance
  • Analyse youth cultures with particular focus on the narrative forms and processes in manga and anime productions, within a global context
  • Search, read, evaluate and synthesise a wide range of interdisciplinary academic materials to inform your own analysis of manga and anime
  • Originate, integrate, and combine ideas on manga and anime in a scholarly manner, appropriate for MA level

General Assessment Information

Assignments are compulsory and must be submitted on time. As a general rule, extensions will not be granted without a valid and documented reason (e.g. medical certificate). Late submissions will be penalised by 5% for each day (including weekends) the assignment task is late. No assignments will be accepted after assignments have been corrected and feedback has been provided. Assignment tasks handed in early will not be marked and returned before the due date.

Disruption to Studies

If a student is prevented by serious and unavoidable disruption from completing unit requirements in accordance with their ability, they may apply for support under the Disruption to Studies Policy. This task requires you to discuss one chosen aspect of a manga/anime, referring to at least one article from each week’s reading list.Your writing should be approximately 300 words.Instruction and marking criteria will be provided in iLearn.

Literature Review

Due: Oct 9
Weighting: 25%

This task requires you to write a 2000 word literature review, by widely exploring academic publications (journal articles, book chapters) on the topic of your interest in manga and/or anime studies. Instruction and marking criteria will be provided in iLearn.

Essay Presentation

Due: November 6
Weighting: 10%

This task requires you to provide a 8-minute audio-recorded presentation on your essay, using only up to five Powerpoint slides. Instruction and marking criteria will be provided in iLearn.

  • Originate, integrate, and combine ideas on manga and anime in a scholarly manner, appropriate for MA level

Essay

Due: November 20
Weighting: 40%

This task requires you to write a 2500-3000 word essay. Instruction and marking criteria will be provided in iLearn.
