Unit description Unit description
This is the second of two practical units in which students attend Macquarie University's Chiropractic and Research Centres as chiropractic interns. In this unit students become responsible for patient management and care under the guidance of the clinic supervisors.

Important Academic Dates

Information about important academic dates including deadlines for withdrawing from units are available at https://www.mq.edu.au/study/calendar-of-dates

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an ability to take a chiropractic clinical history, perform the relevant physical examination, order any necessary radiographs, refer for any other necessary evaluation in order to provisionally diagnose the patient's condition and carry out safe and effective chiropractic management of a patient (as taught by the Department) within the allocated time.
  • Demonstrate an ability to educate patients in the aims and objectives of the proposed care including a rehabilitation program.
  • Demonstrate accurate and appropriate clinical record keeping skills.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of effective administrative structures required for the running of a chiropractic clinic.
  • Demonstrated satisfactory competency in the ongoing assessments and attendance criteria for the clinic internship. Demonstrate ability to meet quotas as determined by the Department with respect to patient consultation requirements as set out in the Council on Chiropractic Education Australasia Inc (CCEA) Standards for First Professional Award Programs in Chiropractic Guidelines (Appendix 1 in Clinic Manual) inclusive of radiography quotas set by the Department with respect to the number of diagnostic radiographs produced and reports written. Demonstrated compliance to all requirements for the unit as described in the Clinic Manual.

General Assessment Information

Students must also complete all minimum required patient treatment numbers, x-ray numbers, x-ray report numbers, outcome evidence questionnaires, rehabilitation plans, neuro-musculoskeletal examinations, community service hours, attendance hours and fieldwork hours in order to pass this unit.

All supplementary examinations will be in a VIVA format.

The DVD and VIVA exams are not considered Hurdle Assessments. Students are therefore not permitted to re-sit either assessment due to failure on the first attempt.

Clinic Internship II will be awarded pass/fail grades only. In order to achieve a PASS grade, a student must attain a minimum aggregate overall raw mark of 70% across the assessments and satisfactory attendance along with completion of all unit requirements as outlined in the 2017 Clinic Manual. If any of these components are not met by the designated time as stipulated in the Clinic Manual a student will receive a FAIL grade for this unit.

Serious and unavoidable disruption: The University classifies a disruption as serious and unavoidable if it:

  • could not have reasonably been anticipated, avoided or guarded against by the student; and
  • was beyond the student's control; and
  • caused substantial disruption to the student's capacity for effective study and/or completion of required work; and
  • occurred during an event critical study period and was at least three (3) consecutive days duration, and/or
  • prevented completion of a final examination.

Students with a pre-existing disability/health condition or prolonged adverse circumstances may be eligible for ongoing assistance and support.  Such support is governed by other policies and may be sought and coordinated through Campus Wellbeing and Support Services.

If you apply for Disruption to Study for your final examination, you must make yourself available for the supplementary examination period.  If you are not available at that time, there is no guarantee an additional examination time will be offered. Specific examination dates and times will be determined at a later date.

If you are granted a supplementary exam via the Disruption to Studies process, you will have to write a supplementary exam in the supplementary exam period. In this scenario, only your supplementary exam mark will count towards your final exam mark, irrespective of whether or not you attended the final exam in the normal examination period. The submission of a Disruption to Studies form should not be used as a ‘just in case’ strategy.

You are advised that it is Macquarie University policy not to set early examinations for individuals or groups of students. You are expected to ensure that you are available until the end of the teaching semester that is the final day of the official examination period.
