Unit description Unit description
This unit aims to advance and consolidate the skills and strategies acquired in the Simultaneous Interpreting into LOTE 1 unit. To this end, more difficult speeches and panel discussions that are delivered and carried out in professional settings will be used for intensive practice into LOTE. Students are required to practice interpreting both with text and without text using a combination of coping strategies.

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

Students are encouraged to participate in in-class activities. Apart from practicsing simultaneous interpreting from English into Chinese , they are expected to undertake self-assessment, peer review and group discussion to continuously improve their own and other students' performances.

Mid-term Examination

Due: Week 7
Weighting: 30%

During the mid-term examination, students will interpret one speech of 2000 words or so from  English into Chinese, with an input rate of 120 words per minute. The theme of the speech will be advised through iLearn one day before the examination.


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • By the end of the semester, students are expected to:
  • 1) Demonstrate the enhanced skills required for simultaneous interpreting into LOTE
  • 2) Master coping strategies required for challenges inherent to simultaneous interpreting into LOTE and manifested in different contexts
  • 3) Demonstrate a systematic and on-going effort in building world knowledge needed for international, regional and inter-governmental and industry-related conferences
  • 4) Critically analyze, evaluate and reflect on your English-to-LOTE simultaneous interpreting performance through individual, peer and group assessment
  • 5) Show a profound understanding of simultaneous interpreting as a life-long practice which requires vigorous and systematic effort on a regular basis

Final Examination

Due: Week 14
Weighting: 50%

During the final examination, students will interpret one speech of over 20 minutes (2500-3000 words) from English into Chinese with an input rate of 140 words per minute. The theme of the speech will be advised through iLearn one week before the examination.

Delivery and Resources

Materials used for this unit are largely selected from the Internet in general and YouTube and Chinese websites in particular. The learning and teaching strategies used are mainly through face to face interaction between lecturers and students.  Additionally, students will be also encouraged to leverage iLearn for communication and participate in group discussion, peer evaluation and group research project for interpreting assignments.
