Unit description Unit description
This unit provides students with opportunities to extend their ability to apply translation techniques to challenging translation tasks from a wide range of genres reflecting current market demand. Students will prepare for professional practice by independently translating and evaluating challenging translation tasks and explore different strategies for handling the complex tasks undertaken by advanced translators. They will further develop their ability to work collaboratively on team and to review translations completed by a third party.

English to LOTE translation

Due: various
Weighting: 20%

Students will be required to translate several texts on varying topics from English into their LOTE.


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Extend translation skills and knowledge to translate texts;
  • Undertake efficient domain and genre specific research for the purpose of translation;
  • Demonstrate critical analysis of source and target texts in a theoretic framework;
  • Justify translation choice on the basis of translation theory;
  • Evaluate and edit target texts to a professional level;
  • Review and revise translation work in accordance with international industry standards;
  • Integrate professional ethical practice into translation work.

LOTE to English translation

Due: various
Weighting: 20%

Students will be required to translate several texts on varying topics from their LOTE into English


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Extend translation skills and knowledge to translate texts;
  • Undertake efficient domain and genre specific research for the purpose of translation;
  • Demonstrate critical analysis of source and target texts in a theoretic framework;
  • Justify translation choice on the basis of translation theory;
  • Evaluate and edit target texts to a professional level;
  • Review and revise translation work in accordance with international industry standards;
  • Integrate professional ethical practice into translation work.

Group Translation Projects

Due: Weeks 11, 12
Weighting: 20%

Students will be required to translate two longer texts, one into English from their LOTE and one into their LOTE from English.  Students will work in groups and be responsible for all aspects of creating a professional translation.


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Extend translation skills and knowledge to translate texts;
  • Undertake efficient domain and genre specific research for the purpose of translation;
  • Demonstrate critical analysis of source and target texts in a theoretic framework;
  • Justify translation choice on the basis of translation theory;
  • Evaluate and edit target texts to a professional level;
  • Review and revise translation work in accordance with international industry standards;
  • Integrate professional ethical practice into translation work.

Exam

Due: Week 13
Weighting: 40%

Students will complete two translation tasks, one into English from their LOTE and one into their LOTE from English, under examination conditions. The exam is computer-based and students are allowed to use any resources that they need including Internet and their own laptop computer.

  • Undertake efficient domain and genre specific research for the purpose of translation;
  • Evaluate and edit target texts to a professional level;
  • Review and revise translation work in accordance with international industry standards;

Delivery and Resources

Each language group has one 3-hour face-to-face class every week, focuses on translation from English into LOTE and from LOTE into English. This unit uses authentic texts such as IT white papers, financial reports, medical journals, and tourist brochures. Students will translate texts that total 30,000 words approximately.

This unit also provides opportunities for students to develop generic skills that are required of professional translators. It is expected that students in this unit will actively participate in various activities designed in this unit and develop their own professional tools.
