Unit description Unit description
This is an intermediate-level unit in modern Chinese. Emphasis is placed on the practical use of the language, both written and oral. This unit also explores cross-cultural communication issues.

  1. 1.1 Able to recognize 600-800 characters 1.2 Understand longer and more complex dialogues and texts written in Chinese characters of topics related to contemporary Chinese society, culture and cross-cultural communications 1.3 Understand more complex grammatical structures
  2. 2.1 Can understand the main points of clear standard input (such as dialogues and passages) of familiar topics

Written Assignments

Weighting: 20%

Two written assignments. They focus on short essay writing and translation. 

Late Submission policy:

Assignments are compulsory and must be submitted on time. As a general rule, extensions will not be granted without a valid and documented reason (e.g. medical certificate). Late submissions will be penalised by 5% for each day (including weekends) the assignment task is late. No assignments will be accepted after assignments have been corrected and feedback has been provided. Assignment tasks handed in early will not be marked and returned before the due date.

This Assessment Task relates to the following Learning Outcomes:

  • Reading: • Recognise Pinyin with tone marks. • Understand short, simple texts (read or unread) related to familiar topics in Chinese characters, picking up familiar high frequent phrases and structures.
  • Writing: • Able to hand write characters in the correct order, and type characters in computer as required • Construct simple sentences, short dialogues and passages on familiar topics

Weighting: 16%

This assessment task will test your overall language proficiency, including pinyin, characters, vocabulary, grammatical structures, translation, reading comprehension and essay writing.

Each of the ten weekly quizzes tests the grammar points and grammatical structures learned in the previous week.

Reading Aloud Recordings

This task consists of 10 students' own recordings. It assesses students' correct pronunciation, tones, fluency and expressive reading of the learned dialogues.

This assessment task aims at evaluating students' active participation in before class preparation, revision, completion of homework, ask and answer questions in class.
