Unit description Unit description
This unit is designed for students who wish to prepare for higher degree research in the Department of International Studies; for research work that relates to language, literature and/or culture studies in one of the languages/cultures taught in the department. The unit will introduce students to research paradigms in language/literature/culture studies and aims at teaching students critical reading and writing skills in relation to those fields.

Presentation

Due: week 13
Weighting: 20%

Students will present their own research ideas aligned with the methodology and theories they have learned from this unit.

Essay

Weighting: 20%

In this essay, students will reflect on which methodology, or methodologies, will be appropriate for their thesis project.

  • Differentiate between a range of methodologies in related research areas.
  • Demonstrate a critical understanding of various research approaches.

Literature Review

Weighting: 40%

Delivery and Resources

Rooms: All Friday seminars will take place in room W6A 407; reading groups will meet in the library. The seminars will run from 11am-1pm Friday unless indicated otherwise; please check the information in iLearn as there may be some variations on the time due to staff availability.

Late submission

Late assignment policy – International Studies, 11 December 2012

 Assignments are compulsory and must be submitted on time. As a general rule, extensions will not be granted without a valid and documented reason (e.g. medical certificate). Late submissions will be penalised by 5% for each day (including weekends) the assignment task is late. No assignments will be accepted after assignments have been corrected and feedback has been provided. Assignment tasks handed in early will not be marked and returned before the due date.
