Unit description Unit description
This unit aims to develop skills in aural rehabilitation and the management of adult clients with hearing loss. The importance of establishing goals for the rehabilitative process and the importance of measuring outcomes is stressed throughout the unit.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • To build from basic knowledge acquired in CAUD805 and demonstrate a more in-depth understanding of hearing loss and hearing rehabilitation and its limitations.
  • Gain a basic understanding of counselling skills as they apply to those with hearing loss.
  • Develop an understanding of noise induced hearing loss by integrating knowledge about the function of the auditory system and physics of sound gained in CAUD803 with more specific information about the process of noise exposure.
  • Develop a knowledge of electrical hearing and its limitations, and of cochlear implant candidacy.
  • Learn to apply aural rehabilitation techniques with hearing impaired adults
  • Critical evaluation of hearing rehabilitation techniques.
  • Basic practical experience of cochlear implant fitting techniques
  • Begin to recognise when standard rehabilitation techniques are insufficient and more in depth aural rehabilitation will be necessary in normal clinical practice situations.
  • Apply knowledge and skills to facilitate clinical practice, particularly in the management of patients with severe to profound hearing loss.

General Assessment Information

How to apply for a late submission of an assignment

All requests for special consideration, including extensions, must be submitted via  ASK.mq.edu.au and provide suitable supporting documentation

 

Late Assignment Submission

  • Late submissions without an extension will receive a penalty of 5% of the total mark available for the assignment per day
  • Late submission of an assignment without an extension will not be permitted after marks have been released to the rest of the class.
  • Extensions will only be given in special circumstances, and can be requested by completing the Special Consideration request at ask.mq.edu.au and providing the requisite supporting documentation.

  • Assignments submitted after the deadline, regardless of the reason, will be marked and returned at a date determined by the unit convenor.

Extensions cannot continue beyond the start of the following semester, and students should be aware that long extensions may impact graduation dates.

Client Construction

Due: week 12
Weighting: 15%

Students are asked to construct a client file, detailing a rehabilitation plan for the provided client.

  • To build from basic knowledge acquired in CAUD805 and demonstrate a more in-depth understanding of hearing loss and hearing rehabilitation and its limitations.
  • Gain a basic understanding of counselling skills as they apply to those with hearing loss.
  • Learn to apply aural rehabilitation techniques with hearing impaired adults
  • Begin to recognise when standard rehabilitation techniques are insufficient and more in depth aural rehabilitation will be necessary in normal clinical practice situations.
  • Apply knowledge and skills to facilitate clinical practice, particularly in the management of patients with severe to profound hearing loss.

Noise Essay

Due: week 6
Weighting: 20%

 Students will be asked to write a formal essay discussing the effects of noise exposure, typically the focus will be on recreation noise expsure.


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Develop an understanding of noise induced hearing loss by integrating knowledge about the function of the auditory system and physics of sound gained in CAUD803 with more specific information about the process of noise exposure.

Quiz

Due: week 11
Weighting: 15%

In class quiz comprising questions on early lectures 


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • To build from basic knowledge acquired in CAUD805 and demonstrate a more in-depth understanding of hearing loss and hearing rehabilitation and its limitations.

Critical Evaluation

Due: week 1
Weighting: 10%

Students will be asked to critically review a research paper 


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Critical evaluation of hearing rehabilitation techniques.

Delivery and Resources

Technology

Work will require basic general computer skills. Some knowledge of Audiology specific technology such as audiometers, real-ear fitting hardware and software is assumed (CAUD805 is a pre-requisite and should furnish the requisite skills). No additional technology is required.

Information

iLearn will predominanlty be used for communication, provision of lecture materials and discussion.
