Unit description
This unit focuses on advanced theoretical aspects of phonetics and the theoretical principles underpinning the study of speech production. The unit provides targeted training in the phonemic and phonetic transcription of spoken English with a concentration on Australian English. Students develop an understanding of sound systems and their function in language. They learn to use the IPA to support a thorough understanding of the articulation of vowels and consonants as well as the intricacies of complex articulations, airstream mechanisms, laryngeal features, and coarticulation in the world's languages. Phonological principles relating to phonemes and allophones, syllables, and word stress are also addressed in preparation for further advanced study in phonological theory.

A set of language-based problem solving exercises.
On successful completion you will be able to:

Delivery and Resources
Students will engage in a variety of learning experiences including structured self-directed learning and a program of advanced readings. Students will develop mastery of advanced practical disciplinary skills which include broad and narrow phonetic transcription and IPA ear-training. Complex data sets and problem solving tasks form the basis of these activities. The skills and concepts developed through this unit are essential preparation for speech science research at PhD level.
