Unit description
This unit aims to help history students consolidate advanced skills in ancient Greek. The unit completes the systematic analysis of grammar begun in unit AHIS308 and further investigates the concepts of dialectal variation and historical development in the classical and post-classical periods. The unit also aims to help students consolidate their skills in reading original Greek literary and documentary texts, and analysing the significance of Greek for the study of relevant ancient cultures.

The purpose of this low-risk assessment is to test your engagement with unit content and developing knowledge and skills.
You will be required to participate in class exercises where we work together to practise translation from English to Ancient Greek.
There will be six of these exercises conducted during the course of the unit and each student is expected to participate in at least four.
External students and others unable (for an acceptable reason) to participate in class will participate via the iLearn Discussion Forum. Two sentences will be set for translation and analysis in each session.
In this assessment marks are awarded for engaged and effective participation in discussions, not for correctness of translation.

The purpose of this assessment task is to develop analytical skills and independent thinking and to help you prepare your technique for addressing Question 2 in the final examination. You will be required to complete two comprehension tests. In each test you need to read five short extracts drawn from the unit readings and comment on specific directions concerning the meaning, form, and function of specific words and expressions (two words or expressions for each passage, so a total of ten words or expressions in each test).
The criteria against which this task will be assessed are accuracy, thoroughness, and clarity of presentation; 50% of the weighting is for the description of meaning and form, 50% for the description of function.

The purpose of this assessment task is to facilitate understanding of Greek grammatical structures. You will be required to translate a series of sentences from English into Greek (five sentences in each of the six prose compositions). The sentences are designed to test your control over concepts discussed in the lectures and (often) illustrated in the unit readings.
The assessment criteria against which this task will be assessed are accuracy, completeness, and technical and stylistic control over the material. A rubric is used for marking this task and its application will be explained in the lectures.

The purpose of this assessment task is to test general control over unit content. The examination is arranged as four questions.
The criteria against which this task will be assessed are accuracy and completeness of translations in Question 1, comments in Question 2, and paradigms in Question 3, and accuracy, completeness, and technical and stylistic control of translations in Question 4.

Satisfactory Completion
Completion of all Assessment Tasks is required to complete the unit satisfactorily.
Submission and Extensions
Internal students are normally expected to fulfil Participation requirements in class, Externals or others unable (for an acceptable reason) to attend class fulfil Participation requirements via the electronic Discussion Forum. Submission of the Comprehension Tests and Prose Compositions is electronic via Turnitin. The Examination is closed-book and administered by the central administration.
Extensions are available on medical grounds and may be requested under other special circumstances. Apply via ask.mq.edu.au
Penalties for Late Submission
Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, (a) a penalty for lateness will apply – two (2) marks out of 100 will be deducted per day for assignments submitted after the due date – and (b) no assignment will be accepted more than seven (7) days (incl. weekends) after the original submission deadline.
