Unit description
This unit introduces students of ancient history to the study of the Latin language. It provides a systematic introduction to the grammar (especially morphology and basic syntax) and vocabulary. The unit also aims to help students develop the skills necessary for reading original Latin texts, and explores the significance of Latin for the study of relevant ancient cultures. |

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:
- ULO1: Recognise and recall Latin script and phonetic structure
- ULO2: Identify and recall Latin grammatical structures at elementary level
- ULO3: Recognise and memorise foundational Latin vocabulary
- ULO4: Assess the grammar required for the translation of simple Latin texts
- ULO5: Explore relevant grammatical and lexical reference tools
- ULO6: Recognise and recall linguistic technical terms
- ULO7: Integrate knowledge of grammar and vocabulary in reading and/or writing simple Latin texts

General Assessment Information
Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, (a) a penalty for lateness will apply – two (2) marks out of 100 will be deducted per day for assignments submitted after the due date – and (b) no assignment will be accepted more than seven (7) days (incl. weekends) after the original submission deadline. No late submissions will be accepted for timed assessments – e.g. quizzes, online tests.
IMPORTANT NOTE ON FINAL MARKS: Please note with respect to the marks you receive for work during the session: that the marks given are indicative only; final marks will be determined after moderation. See further the note on Results in the Policies and Procedures section below.

Satisfactory Completion
Completion of all Assessment Tasks is required to complete the unit satisfactorily.
Submission and Extensions
Submission of the Participation Exercises and Prose Compositions is electronic via Turnitin. Submit the electronic Quizzes via the unit's iLearn page. The Examination is closed-book and administered by the central administration.
Extensions are available on medical grounds and may be requested under other special circumstances. Apply via ask.mq.edu.au

In this unit we will study the first 7 chapters of the Introduction to the Latin Language (available via the unit's iLearn page).
We will also study a series of short readings, featuring original Latin texts from the late republican and early imperial periods.
Full details, including a weekly schedule of topics and a list of assessment due-dates, will be provided on the unit's iLearn page.
