Unit description Unit description

This unit forms part of a four-unit core sequence covering a range of foundational and cutting-edge research topics in cognitive science, with an emphasis on active research programs at MQ. This team-taught unit is made up of a selection of 3-4 topic modules, led by experts specialising in these fields. Topics to be covered may include but are not limited to: the nature of individual and social memory from an interdisciplinary perspective; views about the relationship between memory and the self; disorders of belief formation such as delusions; and theories of consciousness.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Understand the nature of memory and how it is conceptualised and studied in both laboratory and ecological research traditions.
  • ULO2: Understand the role and mechanisms of remembering and forgetting, functions of memory, and the relationship between individual and social memory.
  • ULO3: Understand the nature of normal and pathological cognitive decline with age, and the various ways that memory can be supported.
  • ULO4: Critically evaluate scientific claims, methods and data.
  • ULO5: Conduct a conceptual literature review.
  • ULO6: Draw links between theory, concepts, and findings across different domains and fields.
  • ULO7: Present research to an audience in a clear and engaging way.

General Assessment Information

Late penalty

Late submission of an assignment will attract a penalty of 5% of the maximum mark for every day that the assignment is late (including weekend days). For example, if the assignment is worth 40 marks and your assignment is submitted 2 days late, a penalty of 2x5%x40 = 4 marks will be applied and subtracted from the awarded mark for the assignment. Work submitted more than 7 days after the submission deadline will not be marked and will receive a mark of 0. Please note that it is the student’s responsibility to notify the University of a disruption to their studies and requests for extensions for assignments must be made via the University’s Ask MQ System (as outlined in the Special Consideration Policy).

 

Word count for written assignments

For written assignments, there will be 5% leeway in the word limit (i.e., up to 100 words over 2000), but beyond that you will be penalised 5% of your report mark for every further 100 words over the limit.

Classes

There is one 2-hour class every week, on Wednesdays at 2.30-4.30pm. The class is in the Marri Room, Hearing Hub 3.610, the main seminar room in the Dept of Cognitive Science. There is no recording of classes: at this level you need to attend in person.

This unit is open to MRes Year 1 students in any discipline. Those who are taking the unit for credit towards their MRes will complete the required assessment tasks. Other participants are also very welcome, especially MRes Year 2 students, PhD students, and other interested researchers.

iLearn

You will need access to the internet to access the unit's iLearn page. Through iLearn you will be able to access the readings, and feedback and marks for the assessment tasks. You will be required to submit assessment tasks via iLearn, using the Turnitin submission tool.
