Unit description Unit description
Australia is rooted in a deep human and geological past which has profound meaning and resonance for contemporary Australian society. It has both Indigenous and non-Indigenous foundations. This unit explores these foundations from Indigenous occupation through British contact and colonisation, to self-rule and the establishment of the 'white nation' in 1901. Through the themes of land, life and liberty, we trace the political, economic, cultural and social dynamics at play to discover what characterised the nation's beginnings.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: demonstrate an understanding of the major themes and changes in Australian history from pre-European contact to 1901
  • ULO2: demonstrate an ability to research a topic in Australian colonial history, including the evaluation of a wide range of primary and secondary sources
  • ULO3: interpret historiography to contextualise and analyse problems
  • ULO4: communicate historical arguments coherently and persuasively in written, oral and interpersonal forms

Late Submission Policy

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, (a) a penalty for lateness will apply - two (2) marks out of 100 will be deducted per day for assignments submitted after the due date - and (b) no assignment will be accepted more than seven (7) days (Incl. weekends) after the original submission deadline.

This unit is supported by a comprehensive ilearn homepage on which all information about the unit and all resources, including this unit guide will be found. The ilearn homepage is the interface of the unit, particularly between the convenor and all external students in this unit. The online discussion forum is external's online seminar space and it is vital that external students use this space every week, as if they were attending an on-campus seminar.

The format for this unit is the following:

1x1 hour pre-recorded lecture per week +

1 x 2 hour seminar (for days students only). As mentioned above, all external students need to meet the requirement of this 2 hours via participation in the online discussion forum.

NB: The pre-recorded lectures will be uploaded the Friday before the Monday seminar. You will find them via the Echol 360 link on the right hand side of the ilearn homepage for this unit.

Lectures are compulsory. Questions will asked online about them and your engagement with them will be factored into the 10% participation mark for this unit. The lectures are delivered by the convenor and guest lecturers from the Department.
