Unit description Unit description

This unit prepares students for the world where "data is the new oil". Numerous business case studies are treated in depth so students emerge with a clear understanding of the "unreasonable effectiveness of data".The journey starts with the Linux command line. Along the way students will develop the skills necessary to tease data out of relational databases using SQL. Data visualisation is also a focus of the unit, which treats its analysis and design as well as its implementation using a variety of open source and commercial tools.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO2: Formulate SQL language approaches to relational database problems.
  • ULO1: Devise programming language code for data analytics and visualisation using a variety of computer tools.
  • ULO3: Assemble statistical learning techniques to tackle data science problems.
  • ULO4: Examine and employ a variety of data visualisation techniques.
  • ULO5: Evaluate various popular data visualisation solutions.

General Assessment Information

Gradebook

It is the responsibility of students to view their marks for each within session assessment on iLearn within 20 working days of posting. If there are any discrepancies, students must contact the unit convenor immediately. Failure to do so will mean that queries received after the release of final results regarding assessment marks (not including the final exam mark) will not be addressed.

Special consideration

Where a Special Consideration application is approved, the student may be offered an alternative assessment or may receive a mark based on the percentage mark achieved by the student in one or more other assessment tasks, at the Unit Convenor’s discretion.

Late submissions and extensions

Tasks 10% or less – No extensions will be granted. Students who have not submitted the task prior to the deadline will be awarded a mark of 0 for the task, except for cases in which an application for special consideration is made and approved.

Tasks above 10% - No extensions will be granted. There will be a deduction of 10% of the total available marks made from the total awarded mark for each 24 hour period or part thereof that the submission is late (for example, 25 hours late in submission – 20% penalty). This penalty does not apply for cases in which an application for special consideration is made and approved. No submission will be accepted after solutions have been posted.

These requirements mean that no extensions will be granted and as each task is worth less than (or equal to) 10% (10%, 5%, 10%, 5%, 8%, 4%, 8%, 4% and 6%), missing a submission deadline will result in a mark of zero for the task, except where an application for special consideration is made and approved.

Technology Used and Required

Assignments

You need to electronically submit your written solutions (using iLearn) to the assignments as PDF files. Some possibilities to produce these files are: scan your handwritten solutions to a PDF file;use WORD (or similar software) to type out your solutions and save your work as a PDF file. For each assignment you can only submit one PDF file; it must contain all the pages of your solution (so make sure, if your scanner produces separate PDF pages, that you can combine them into one file). Your PDF file must be able to read by the current version of Adobe Acrobat Reader—check this is the case before submission (if it can't be read, then it can't be marked and you will be awarded a mark of zero for the assessment task).

Some assignments will require you to write code, which has to run and checked by your marker(s). To submit code, you will need to have a GitHub account, and will have to post your solutions in GitHub. You will need to include the URL of your GitHub solutions in your written solutions (your PDF file) so your marker(s) can find and mark your code.

Results published on platform other than eStudent, (eg. iLearn, Coursera etc.) or released directly by your Unit Convenor, are not confirmed as they are subject to final approval by the University. Once approved, final results will be sent to your student email address and will be made available in eStudent.
