Unit description Unit description

The aim of this reading course is to introduce students to the main principles of the German language in order to enable them to read academic texts in German. They will develop a basic vocabulary and insight into grammatical structures, practice language learning techniques, use relevant tools such as dictionaries (both general and specialist dictionaries) and computer-based translation programs. Students will acquire a reading strategy enabling them to unravel and translate more complex texts, thus preparing them with the tools to access scholarly work in their research discipline.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Identify basic and more complex structures of German as they appear in academic writing.
  • ULO2: Analyse the structures of written German to a degree sufficent to allow for translation into English with the help of specialist and non-specialist dictionaries.
  • ULO3: Use print and online resources in aid of comprehension and translation of German academic texts.
  • ULO4: Use print and online resources in aid of comprehension and translation of German academic texts.
  • ULO5: Demonstrate a reading strategy for working with academic texts in German.

General Assessment Information

General Assessment Information

Criteria and standards of grading are explained with each of the assessment tasks. Assessment tasks must be submitted by the specified due date and will be returned online. For details, see the iLearn site. Extensions can only be granted in exceptional cases and require application in accordance with the Special Consideration Policy (see link below) before the assignment is due. - To complete the unit successfully, the student will need to submit all pieces of written work and to achieve an overall mark of 50% or above.

Late submission of assessment - Penalty

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, (a) a penalty for lateness will apply – two (2) marks out of 100 will be deducted per day for assignments submitted after the due date – and (b) no assignment will be accepted more than seven (7) days (incl. weekends) after the original submission deadline. No late submissions will be accepted for timed assessments – e.g. quizzes, online tests.

DELIVERY

Day class for on-campus students (Mondays 4-6 pm). This unit has an accompanying iLearn website where students have access to all the study materials and exercises.

  • required: access to a good size (!) German-English / English-German Dictionary such as Harper / Collins (PONS) Unabridged Dictionary: German - English, English - German or Oxford-Duden Unabridged Dictionary: German - English, English - German  (note: further recommendations will be made in Week 1)
  • required: unit materials available on the iLearn site and built week by week into a complete textbook by Week 12.
  • recommended: Durrell / Kohl / Loftus / Kaiser, Essential German Grammar, 2nd edition, Routledge: 2015, ISBN 978-1-138-78581-6

Technology

Students are required to have regular access to a computer and the internet. Mobile devices alone are not sufficient.

For students attending classes on campus we strongly encourage that you bring along your own laptop computer, ready to work with activities in your online unit. The preferred operating system is Windows 10.

Students are required to access the online unit in iLearn by the end of Week 1 and follow any relevant instructions and links for downloads that may be required. If applicable, students are required to download the relevant language package prior to Week 2.

Please contact your course convenor before the end of Week 1 if you do not have a suitable laptop (or tablet) for in-class use.
