Unit description
Europe is the birthplace of cinema, and film and television now more than ever are central to how European cultural identities are created and represented. Focusing on the themes of memory and migration, this unit invites students to explore cinematic narratives and techniques, engaging with social, political and cultural change in films from a number of European countries as well as transnational productions. Through a range of activities, students will be encouraged to explore fresh and multifaceted perspectives on telling stories of past and present societies through film. The unit will be delivered in English. |

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:
- ULO1: apply advanced theoretical and technical knowledge of film studies to identify, formulate, and evaluate cinematic representations of memory and migration.
- ULO2: identify and explain a range of factors that determine and challenge European identity.
- ULO3: research, synthesise and interpret concepts of European identity in cinema.
- ULO4: critically discuss and analyse film content in a refined and precise manner.

General Assessment Information
Marking criteria
Marking rubrics/criteria and indicative sample texts for assessment tasks can be found in the iLearn unit.
Submission of Assessment
Submission of tasks is via iLearn. All assessment tasks are compulsory and must be submitted on time. Assignment tasks handed in early will not be marked and returned before the due date.
Late Assessment Penalty
Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, (a) a penalty for lateness will apply – two (2) marks out of 100 will be deducted per day for assignments submitted after the due date – and (b) no assignment will be accepted more than seven (7) days (incl. weekends) after the original submission deadline. No late submissions will be accepted for timed assessments – e.g. quizzes, online tests.
