Unit description Unit description

In this unit, students will have the opportunity to investigate a specific research issue in their domain of choice within accessible communication. They can focus their research investigation in either Accessibility and Second language teaching, Accessibility and Intercultural Communication, Accessibility and Translation & Interpreting, Accessibility and Editing & Publishing, or Accessibility and Disability Studies as an extension of their initial proposal in their Research Methods unit. This unit enables students to survey current studies in their choice of research topic and conduct an empirical research study.

  • ULO1: Assess the appropriateness of a research proposal with focused research questions and methodology.
  • ULO2: Demonstrate familiarity with the literature of a specific domain in the field of accessible communication.
  • ULO3: Critically analyse research problems in one of the five possible areas of accessible communication within the program.
  • ULO4: Discuss, analyse, and communicate findings of accessible communication research.
  • ULO5: Demonstrate an understanding of appropriate research methodology and apply it in an extended research project on an area in accessible communication.

Research Paper

Assessment Type 1: Report

Students are required to submit a 4,000 word research report to present the details of their research project outlining in detail their research questions, data collection and data analysis methodologies, findings, discussion relevant to existing literature, and the significance of their research findings.


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Assess the appropriateness of a research proposal with focused research questions and methodology.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with the literature of a specific domain in the field of accessible communication.
  • Critically analyse research problems in one of the five possible areas of accessible communication within the program.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of appropriate research methodology and apply it in an extended research project on an area in accessible communication.

Research proposal

Assessment Type 1: Plan
Indicative Time on Task 2: 15 hours
Due: TBC
Weighting: 25%

Students are required to submit a 1500 word research proposal that outlines their plan for their research project for this unit. This needs to clearly indicate the research question, methodology for both data collection and data analysis, and the significance of the research.


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Assess the appropriateness of a research proposal with focused research questions and methodology.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with the literature of a specific domain in the field of accessible communication.
  • Critically analyse research problems in one of the five possible areas of accessible communication within the program.
  • Discuss, analyse, and communicate findings of accessible communication research.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of appropriate research methodology and apply it in an extended research project on an area in accessible communication.

Research Proposal Presentation

Assessment Type 1: Presentation
Indicative Time on Task 2: 10 hours
Due: TBC
Weighting: 20%

Students are required to present their research plan. The presentation provides them with a platform to gain feedback on the various aspects of their research plan.


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Assess the appropriateness of a research proposal with focused research questions and methodology.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with the literature of a specific domain in the field of accessible communication.
  • Critically analyse research problems in one of the five possible areas of accessible communication within the program.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of appropriate research methodology and apply it in an extended research project on an area in accessible communication.
