Unit description
This unit will introduce students to ethical issues arising in healthcare, and provide a detailed examination of key issues. The unit will be organised into three sections. The first explores the rights and duties associated with healthcare at the beginning and end of life. Questions canvassed may include: What happens when foetal interests conflict with the interests of parents (who may be genetic, gestational or social)? How can we justify limits in providing resources to terminally ill patients? Can conscientious objection by healthcare providers be ethically justified? The second section focuses on ethical issues at the level of healthcare systems and may involve discussion of questions such as: How do the systems and contexts within which healthcare practitioners work affect their roles and duties? What kinds of conflict of interest are prevalent in healthcare systems and what are their consequences? Can codes of ethics address these issues? The third section investigates justice and equity in healthcare and may include examination of questions like: Why does ill health track socioeconomic disadvantage? How does discrimination affect the health of individuals and populations? What are the ethical consequences of seeking transnational health care, for example, travelling to obtain an organ transplant? |

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

General Assessment Information
Late Submission Penalty
Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, (a) a penalty for lateness will apply – two (2) marks out of 100 will be deducted per day for assignments submitted after the due date – and (b) no assignment will be accepted more than seven (7) days (incl. weekends) after the original submission deadline. No late submissions will be accepted for timed assessments – e.g. quizzes, online tests.
