Unit description
This unit gives students an opportunity to develop and demonstrate advanced research skills by undertaking independent research under academic supervision. The unit requires completion of a dissertation of approximately 4-5000 words in one semester on a topic within the scope of international relations. Students formulate their research topic in consultation with an academic supervisor, and their topic must be approved by the convenor as suitable for an MIR dissertation. This unit is designed to help prepare students for more extended independent research in the Master of Research or elsewhere. Applications to undertake this unit close four weeks before the start of each semester in which it is offered. As part of the application process students are required to submit an Expression of Interest Form and to have confirmed that a member of staff in the discipline of Politics and International Relations is willing to act as their supervisor. Admission will only be possible for students who have maintained a Credit average across previous MIR units. |

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:
- ULO1: Acquire the ability to plan, design and execute self-directed research on a topic in the field of International Relations.
- ULO2: Develop enhanced knowledge and skills in the application of relevant concepts, theories and methodologies.
- ULO3: Analyse, evaluate and synthesise scholarly evidence independently.
- ULO4: Develop the ability to effectively communicate academic arguments.

General Assessment Information
Late Submission Penalty
Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, (a) a penalty for lateness will apply – two (2) marks out of 100 will be deducted per day for assignments submitted after the due date – and (b) no assignment will be accepted more than seven (7) days (incl. weekends) after the original submission deadline. No late submissions will be accepted for timed assessments – e.g. quizzes, online tests.

This unit is primarily research oriented. The students will have only three face-to-face sessions (Weeks: 1, 7 and 12).
The sessions will be held on the Tuesdays of the chosen weeks at 04WR 301.
The sessions will begin at 9.00 am and end at 11.00.
