Unit description Unit description

This unit deals with researching and investigating ideas for screen media in a convergent era. It explores techniques for generating and developing ideas for drama, documentary, video essays and hybrid forms. Students will be guided through the process of writing, editing and producing and critically evaluating their own screen projects. There will be opportunities to work both individually and collaboratively. Together, students will explore the purpose and role of screen storytelling around the globe.

Learning Outcomes

  • ULO1: demonstrate advanced knowledge of the practices and aesthetics of developing an online Video Essay, from generating ideas to production.
  • ULO2: synthesize audio-visual storytelling skills through the development of an online Video Essay.
  • ULO3: analyse selected audio-visual products.
  • ULO4: apply creative media skills and theories by taking an idea through several key stages and working with text and images.

General Assessment Information

All assessments to be submitted on iLearn only.

Late Submissions Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, (a) a penalty for lateness will apply – two (2) marks out of 100 will be deducted per day for assignments submitted after the due date – and (b) no assignment will be accepted more than seven (7) days (including weekends) after the original submission deadline

Reflective Statement

Assessment Type 1: Reflective Writing
Indicative Time on Task 2: 15 hours
Due: 01/06/20
Weighting: 20%

This task is a statement reflecting on what has been learned throughout this course. The statement should include: 1. reflections on challenges faced in the development of the Online Video Essay. 2. responses to these challenges. 3. learning resulting from navigating these challenges. 4. reflections on broader aspects of Online Video Essay production that were exciting, troubling or otherwise interesting. 5. inclusion of references to in-class discussions and/or key reading and viewing materials.

Video Essay Concept/Outline

Assessment Type 1: Plan
Indicative Time on Task 2: 34 hours
Due: 23/03/20
Weighting: 35%

This task requires student to research and Write a Concept/Outline for a 6-8-minute Online Video Essay. This outline should document a plan for a Video Essay that addresses any aspect of screen storytelling, production, aesthetics (fiction, non-fiction or hybrid) that interests you OR addresses a contemporary or historical topic that would make it suitable for dissemination via an online journalism/ documentary site.

The concept/outline should: 1. describe your initial screen idea and your intended approach including: themes, subject, imagery, audio and/or sound design concept, argument, narrative, tone, genre. (As many of these as appropriate to your idea). 2. include key images and sounds and brief notes on the ways you will research and develop your concept. 3. address 2 short online video essays you have sourced that might inspire aspects of your own. Briefly identify what they do effectively that you may draw on.

Video Essay Production

Assessment Type 1: Media presentation
Indicative Time on Task 2: 45 hours
Due: 18/05/20
Weighting: 45%

This assignment requires the completion of a 6-8-minute ‘Online Video Essay’. The Video Essay should: 1. address an aspect of screen storytelling, production, aesthetics (fiction, non-fiction or hybrid) that interests you OR 2. address a contemporary or historical topic that would make it suitable for dissemination via an online journalism/ documentary site.
