Unit description Unit description

This unit focuses on advanced theoretical aspects of phonetics and the theoretical principles underpinning the study of speech production. The unit provides targeted training in the phonemic and phonetic transcription of spoken English with a concentration on Australian English. Students develop an understanding of sound systems and their function in language. They learn to use segmental and/or prosodic transcription systems to support a thorough understanding of the articulation of vowels and consonants, as well as the intricacies of complex articulations, airstream mechanisms, laryngeal features, coarticulation, and intonation in the world's languages. Phonological principles relating to phonemes and allophones, syllables, and word stress are also addressed in preparation for further advanced study in phonological theory.
