Unit description
This unit aims to advance and consolidate the skills and strategies acquired in the Simultaneous Interpreting into LOTE 1 unit. To this end, more difficult speeches and panel discussions that are delivered and carried out in professional settings will be used for intensive practice into LOTE. Students are required to practice interpreting both with text and without text using a combination of coping strategies.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:
- ULO1: Demonstrate the enhanced skills required for simultaneous interpreting into LOTE.

General Assessment Information
Assessment submission

How to apply for a late submission of an assignment
All requests for special consideration, including extensions, must be submitted via https://ask.mq.edu.au/ and provide suitable supporting documentation. Contact your unit convenor first for advice, especially in the case of an emergency or if you are unsure about the extension policy.
Late Assignment Submission
- Late submissions without an extension will receive a penalty of 5% of the total mark available for the assignment per day
- Late submission of an assignment without an extension will not be permitted after marks have been released to the rest of the class.
- Extensions will only be given in special circumstances, and can be requested by completing the Special Consideration request at ask.mq.edu.au and providing the requisite supporting documentation. - Assignments submitted after the deadline, regardless of the reason, will be marked and returned at a date determined by the unit convenor.
- Extensions cannot continue beyond the start of the following semester except under exceptional circumstances, and students should be aware that long extensions may impact graduation dates.

Assessment Type 1: Examination
Indicative Time on Task 2: 1 hours

Weighting: 50%
Students are required to interpret one speech of 20 minutes or slightly longer from English into LOTE (Language other than English), equivalent to 2,600 to 3,000 words, using the simultaneous mode in the conference interpreting booths. An interpreting brief will be published through iLearn one week before the examination date. Individual performance will be marked with marking rubrics that are made available to students via iLearn at the beginning of the unit.
On successful completion you will be able to:
- Demonstrate the enhanced skills required for simultaneous interpreting into LOTE.
- Apply coping strategies required for challenges inherent to simultaneous interpreting into LOTE and manifested in different contexts.
- Demonstrate a systematic and on-going effort in building world knowledge needed for international, regional and inter-governmental and industry-related conferences.
In-class assessment
Assessment Type 1: Participatory task

This is a hurdle assessment task (see assessment policy for more information on hurdle assessment tasks)
Students are strongly encouraged to attend all of the lectures and tutorials scheduled for the unit to acquire the necessary skills and strategies of simultaneous interpreting. Students will undertake simultaneous interpreting exercises with more complex and specialized speeches, and are encouraged to carry out self-assessment as well as peer assessment in and outside class. Both formative and summative feedback will be provided to students during class time.

Mid-term examination

Weighting: 30%
Students are required to interpret one speech of approximately 15 to 20 minutes from English into LOTE (language other than English), equivalent to 2,100 to 2,500 English words using the simultaneous mode in the conference interpreting booths. An interpreting brief will be published through iLearn one week before the examination date. Individual performance will be marked with marking rubrics that are made available to students via iLearn at the beginning of the unit.
On successful completion you will be able to:

Delivery and Resources
Materials used for this unit are largely selected from the Internet in general and YouTube and EU Speech Repository in particular. The learning and teaching strategies used are mainly through face to face interaction between lecturers and students. Additionally, students will be also encouraged to leverage iLearn for communication and participate in group discussion, peer evaluation and group research project for interpreting assignments.
