Unit description Unit description
This unit examines the psychological, pedagogical, practical, and policy foundations of bilingual education in an increasingly globalised world. It presents an overview of the types of bilingual programs and the principles of effective bilingual education including theory, research, and effective strategies. This unit offers the opportunity to participate in an international/local trip and field experience in bilingual schools. Students participating in this field experience are expected to conduct additional research on a selected topic on bilingual education and write a research paper of their findings.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Develop and apply understandings of the theoretical foundations of bilingual education.
  • ULO2: Analyse and draw conclusions about the mechanisms of bilingualism and related studies.
  • ULO3: Critically evaluate bilingual education models adopted in different countries.
  • ULO4: Contextualise the important roles of family, school, society and culture in bilingual education.
  • ULO5: Appraise curriculum design theories in strategic planning, implementation and evaluation related to bilingual education.
