Unit description Unit description
This introductory Russian unit is designed for students with basic knowledge of Russian, equivalent to one semester of studying the language at university level. The objective of the unit is to expand students' vocabulary and to teach new Russian grammatical structures that will help them to communicate in everyday situations in Russian-speaking contexts. Students will develop their listening and speaking skills, as well as reading and writing skills, through varied activities and tasks.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Develop comprehensive elementary level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Russian language.
  • ULO2: Identify, describe and evaluate some aspects of Russian-speaking cultures and societies.
  • ULO3: Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of Russian at elementary level.
  • ULO4: Apply relevant language conventions to create meaningful intercultural encounters.
  • ULO5: Demonstrate an awareness of some language and language use, in both Russian and in English.

General Assessment Information

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, (a) a penalty for lateness will apply – two (2) marks out of 100 will be deducted per day for assignments submitted after the due date – and (b) no assignment will be accepted more than seven (7) days (incl. weekends) after the original submission deadline. No late submissions will be accepted for timed assessments – e.g. quizzes, online tests.

Assessment Type 1: Participatory task

Students have to demonstrate their knowledge and engagement with material explained during the semester. External students will engage with this task online.


On successful completion you will be able to:

  • Identify, describe and evaluate some aspects of Russian-speaking cultures and societies.
  • Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of Russian at elementary level.

  • Demonstrate an awareness of some language and language use, in both Russian and in English.

Oral test

Assessment Type 1: Presentation
Indicative Time on Task 2: 2 hours
Due: Week 12
Weighting: 30%

For the oral test, students have to prepare a three-minute talk on a topic of their choice. Students will be assessed on their presentation, as well as their ability to answer follow-up questions. This will be a part of regular seminar time. Online students will do this task via Zoom.


On successful completion you will be able to:

  • Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of Russian at elementary level.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of some language and language use, in both Russian and in English.

Final test

Weighting: 45%

The purpose of the written test is to check students’ knowledge of all aspects of grammar and vocabulary that they learn throughout the semester. Online version available to external students.

Technology

Students are required to have regular access to a computer and the internet. Mobile devices alone are not sufficient. The preferred operating system is Windows 10.

Students are required to access the online unit in iLearn by the end of Week 1 and follow any relevant instructions and links for downloads that may be required.
