Unit description Unit description

Blockchain is an emerging technology that is being adopted by many industries to achieve competitive advantage. Students will evaluate how blockchain technology in a specific industry provides competitive advantage. The primary objective of this unit is for students to be able to critically assess the benefits and risks of adopting blockchain technology and examine how organisations can take advantage of future trends to achieve competitive advantage.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Explain the structure of Blockchain including the benefits and risks
  • ULO2: Evaluate how Blockchain provides competitive advantage in a specific industry
  • ULO3: Critically assess the applications of Blockchain including the legal, ethical and governance issues relating to Blockchain
  • ULO4: Investigate future trends in Blockchain and associated technologies

General Assessment Information

Weekly Assessment

Due: Weeks 3-12 (10 weeks)

Weighting: 30%

A variety of activities will be assigned each week from weeks 3 to 12. Full details are available on iLearn.

Submission

All activities will be online, including discussion forums and reports.  All reports will be submitted through Turnitin. Students will receive feedback within two weeks of the submission.

Extensions

No extensions will be granted.

Penalty for Late Submission

No extensions will be granted. There will be a deduction of 10% of the total available marks made from the total awarded mark for every 24 hours or part thereof that the submission is late (for example, 25 hours late in submission – 20% penalty). This penalty does not apply for cases in which an application for special consideration is made and approved (see https://students.mq.edu.au/study/my-study-program/special-consideration). No submission will be accepted after solutions have been posted.

Blockchain Case Study

Due: Week 7 (13 September 2020)

Weighting: 30%

This assessment task aim is to investigate a specific blockchain case study to understand how blockchain can be used to achieve competitive advantage (full details are available on iLearn).

Submission

All reports will be submitted through Turnitin. Students will receive feedback within two weeks of the submission.

Extensions

No extensions will be granted.

Weighting: 40%

This assessment task aim is to research the future of Blockchain adoption and provide recommendations for managers, boards and stakeholders for adopting Blockchain solutions with the understanding of the potential future scenarios. Full details are available on iLearn.

Submission

All reports will be submitted through Turnitin. Students will receive feedback within two weeks of the submission.

Each week students will be required to complete an assessment to demonstrate their understanding of the material. This includes discussion forums, short reports or other activity relevant for the material.

Future of Blockchain

Weighting: 40%

Delivery and Resources

This unit will be taught online.

Each week there will be a Zoom catch-up where I will be available to answer any questions, clarify expectations for assignments as well as provide an opportunity for you to connect with each other.  The Zoom meeting will be on Wednesday at 5pm from Week 1 to Week 13.  This Zoom catch-up each week is not compulsory but you are strongly encouraged to attend.  I will record and upload the Zoom recording to Echo in iLearn.  

The Zoom details will be available on iLearn.

 The dates are from Week 1  to Week 13 (Wednesday 29th July to Wednesday 4 November - inclusive of the session break).
