Unit description Unit description

This unit aims to incorporate deeper learning of Greek terminologies into areas such as economics, medicine, education and technology. The students will develop a transferable knowledge and linguistic skills of Greek, which includes both linguistic expertise in a particular area and procedural knowledge of how, why, and when to apply this linguistic knowledge to each area.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Identify basic and complex terminologies of Greek as they appear in areas such as economics, medicine, education and technology
  • ULO2: De-code and assess the meaning and significance of linguistic information in Greek through the use of etymology
  • ULO3: Apply the use of Greek etymology in terms in medicine, education, economics and technology
  • ULO4: Demonstrate an etymological knowledge in using correctly Greek terminology in areas such as economics, medicine, education and technology.

Late Assessment Penalty

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, (a) a penalty for lateness will apply – two (2) marks out of 100 will be deducted per day for assignments submitted after the due date – and (b) no assignment will be accepted more than seven (7) days (incl. weekends) after the original submission deadline. No late submissions will be accepted for timed assessments – e.g. quizzes, online tests.

  • Apply the use of Greek etymology in terms in medicine, education, economics and technology
  • Demonstrate an etymological knowledge in using correctly Greek terminology in areas such as economics, medicine, education and technology.

Final test

Assessment Type 1: Quiz/Test
Indicative Time on Task 2: 2 hours
Due: Week 13
Weighting: 40%

This is the final test including exercises covering the content of the unit.


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • De-code and assess the meaning and significance of linguistic information in Greek through the use of etymology
  • Apply the use of Greek etymology in terms in medicine, education, economics and technology
  • Demonstrate an etymological knowledge in using correctly Greek terminology in areas such as economics, medicine, education and technology.

That students purchase the OXFORD GREEK-ENGLISH, ENGLISH-GREEK Dictionaries, Oxford University Press, Oxford.

That students familiarize themselves with the LEXICON OF THE MODERN GREEK LANGUAGE, by G. Babiniotes.

Technology

Students are required to have access to a computer and the internet. Mobile devices alone are not sufficient.

Students are required to access the online unit in iLearn by the end of Week 1 and follow any relevant instructions and links for downloads that may be required. If applicable, students are required to download the relevant language package prior to Week 2.

Please contact your course convenor before the end of Week 1 if you do not have a suitable laptop (or tablet) for in-class use.
