Unit description Unit description

The guitar is an integral instrument within many genres of popular music in the 20th and 21st centuries. This unit introduces students to fundamental guitar playing techniques in particular styles. Through hands-on practical workshops, students will develop musicianship and performance skills, as well as relevant contextual and historical knowledge of the guitar as instrument. No prior knowledge of guitar is required.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: evaluate historical, social and technical knowledge of the guitar in a personal approach to learning the instrument.
  • ULO2: participate, evaluate and gain a practical understanding of the role of the contemporary guitarist as soloist and in an ensemble.
  • ULO3: communicate personal playing skills through selection, rehearsal and performance of appropriate repertoire.
  • ULO4: demonstrate an understanding of relevant music theory for guitar playing.

Theory, context and listening quizzes and activities

A series of quizzes and online iLearn based activities will be presented throughout the semester testing knowledge of essential theory, history, listening to suggested repertoire and engagement with fundamental guitar related knowledge presented in the lecture material. Refer to iLearn for further information.

  • demonstrate an understanding of relevant music theory for guitar playing.

Practical guitar playing exercises submitted as recordings

Assessment Type 1: Practice-based task
Indicative Time on Task 2: 50 hours
Due: Weeks 5, 8, 13
Weighting: 50%

 

Assessed continuously through performance of technical exercises, tablature reading, pieces and extracts set in class. These exercises and pieces will be provided by tutors at least two weeks in advance to allow for practice and preparation. Students will video record themselves performing short tasks on the guitar, then submit them online for assessment. Refer to iLearn for further information.

Late Assignment Submission

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, (a) a penalty for lateness will apply – two (2) marks out of 100 will be deducted per day for assignments submitted after the due date – and (b) no assignment will be accepted more than seven (7) days (including weekends) after the original submission deadline. No late submissions will be accepted for timed assessments – e.g. quizzes, online tests
