Unit description Unit description

This unit within the Master of Public Health focuses on leadership, teamwork, advocacy and innovation with the development of key practical skills in these areas for a career in public health. You will develop skills to collaborate and communicate effectively in multi-disciplinary teams of diverse backgrounds and in different contexts. You will also learn to apply reflective thinking to your public health practice and implement fresh, innovative ideas to address complex public health issues. You will engage with a wide variety of leaders in public health throughout the unit and learn from them what public health advocacy is and how to conduct an advocacy campaign.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Compare leadership theory and frameworks in relation to public health.
  • ULO2: Develop personal definitions of leadership and leadership development plans.
  • ULO3: Develop and apply teamwork processes and skills for authentic solutions to address real-world challenges for public health team work and leadership.
  • ULO4: Apply reflective thinking in relation to individual characteristics, style and personal attitudes and beliefs and consider how these impact on decision making.
  • ULO5: Explain the importance of, and mechanisms for, advocacy for the public health profession.
  • ULO6: Apply innovative thinking and work in new ways to face challenges in public health.

General Assessment Information

Information concerning Macquarie University's assessment policy is available at https://staff.mq.edu.au/work/strategy-planning-and-governance/university-policies-and-procedures/policies/assessment. Grade descriptors and other information concerning grading requirements are contained in Schedule 1 of the Macquarie University Assessment Policy.

To pass this unit, students must demonstrate sufficient evidence of achievement of the learning outcomes and attempt all assessment tasks.

All final grades in the Department of Health Systems and Populations are determined by a grading committee and are not the sole responsibility of the Unit Convenor.

Students will be awarded one of these grades plus a Standardised Numerical Grade (SNG). The SNG is not necessarily a summation of the individual assessment components. The final grade and SNG that are awarded reflect the corresponding grade descriptor in Schedule 1 of the Assessment Policy.

Late Submission of Work

All assignments which are officially received after the due date, and where no extension has been granted by the course convenor or tutor, will incur a deduction of 5% for the first day including the actual day on which the work is received, and 5% for each subsequent day. Weekends and public holidays are included. Late penalty is capped at 50%. For example:

Group advocacy campaign

Students work in groups to create a public health advocacy campaign that raises awareness or advocates for policy change.

Unit Organisation

Technology and equipment

Off-campus

To study optimally when off campus you will need to have access to a reliable internet connection to retrieve unit information and at times to join interactive sessions (e.g. Zoom) or submit assessment tasks via iLearn.

On-campus

Teaching rooms are equipped with state of art audio-visual and ICT equipment including internet connection, high quality video cameras and multiple LCD screens.
