Unit description
This unit will extend your research skills to develop a deep and contemporary understanding of methodological, regulatory and professional aspects of physiotherapy research. You will work closely with a research supervisor to integrate your professional, clinical and research skills to plan a research project. This will include justifying the research aims through thorough background research of the topic area, and clearly articulating the methodological process required to meet the research aims. |

General Assessment Information
Information concerning Macquarie University's assessment policy is available at http://mq.edu.au/policy/docs/assessment/policy_2016.html. Grade descriptors and other information concerning grading requirements are contained in Schedule 1 of the Macquarie University Assessment Policy.
To pass this unit, students must demonstrate sufficient evidence of achievement of the learning outcomes. Further details for each assessment task will be available on iLearn, including marking rubrics.
All final grades in the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences are determined by the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences Assessment Committee, and are approved by the Faculty Board. They are not the sole responsibility of the Unit Convenor. Students will be awarded an Assessment Grade plus a Standardised Numerical Grade (SNG). The SNG is not necessarily a summation of the individual assessment components. The final grade and SNG that are awarded reflect the corresponding grade descriptor in Schedule 1 of the Assessment Policy.

If there is a lack of sufficient evidence demonstrating that a student has met the required level of achievement in all learning outcomes they will be awarded a Fail grading with an assigned mark of 49 or less.

Late Submission of Work
All assignments which are officially received after the due date, and where no extension has been granted by the unit convenor or course director, will incur a deduction of 10% for the first day, and 10% for each subsequent day including the actual day on which the work is received. Assessments received 5 days or more beyond the due date, without an approved extension, will be awarded a maximum of 50% of the overall assessment marks. Weekends and public holidays are included. Hurdle Assessment
A hurdle requirement is an activity for which a minimum level of performance or participation is a condition of passing the unit in which it occurs. A student who has obtained a SNG over 50, yet failed the hurdle assessment, fails the unit. Please see Macquarie University's assessment policy for more information about hurdle assessment tasks. There are no hurdle assessment tasks in this unit.

Delivery and Resources
Assumed knowledge
This unit builds and integrates material from previous semesters, particularly Evidence-based Healthcare and Healthcare Complexity and Physiotherapy.
Teaching and Learning Strategy
This unit encompasses an active learning approach where you will be expected to actively engage in enhancing your own learning experience. Online lectures will provide content and will also incorporate large group online discussion, which will be further built upon in small group online tutorials. Online tutorials will focus on extending your current knowledge, skills and application in research settings and writing feedback sessions will be provided to assist with scientific research skills. You will meet with your research supervisors on a regular basis, either individually or in a group, to discuss your research project and plans. You will also be required to independently identify aspects of your research skills that require further development and engage active strategies to achieve these. The teaching approach will be based on you developing a deep understanding of the principles and the ability to independently solve problems. Also included within the unit will be a focus upon increasing your digital literacy and advanced communication skills, with creativity and innovation being embraced.
Unit Organisation
This is a ten credit point unit run over a 13 week session. Within this session there will be online lectures, online tutorials and meetings with your research supervisor and peers across the semester. Additionally, independent study is integrated across the entire semester. Further information is available in iLearn.
Attendance
In the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences professionalism is a key capability embedded in all our programs. As part of developing professionalism, Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences students are expected to attend all small group interactive sessions including tutorials, live Q and A and research meetings with supervisors.
All live Q and A and tutorials are scheduled in your individual timetable. The timetable for classes can be found on the University web site at: http://www.timetables.mq.edu.au/. You may make a request to your tutor to attend a different tutorial on a one-off basis for extenuating circumstances.
Failure to attend any learning and teaching activities, including tutorials and research meetings with your supervisor, may impact your final results. It is your responsibility to contact the unit convenor or research supervisor by email to inform them if you are going to be absent.
Unit materials and readings
There is no compulsory textbook for this unit. Resources will be referred to throughout the unit with specific information provided on the unit iLearn site. You will be expected to independently search for resources relevant to your research project, and your research supervisor will provide guidance as required.

Changes from Previous Offering
The previous iteration of this unit (PHTY819 2019) included a module incorporating a seminar series showcasing and evaluating the work of distinguished scientists in physiotherapy and related fields. This module is no longer included within the unit, with a greater emphasis now applied to the development of advanced research skills. Subsequently, assessment tasks have been altered to reflect the change in focus of the unit. Furthermore, all learning and teaching activities have now been moved to the online environment rather than face-to-face.
