Unit description
This unit provides introductory Japanese language instruction for students with no previous knowledge of Japanese. Students develop basic speaking, listening, reading & writing skills, including mastery of the hiragana & katakana scripts. By the end of the course, students should be able to describe their surroundings, ask questions, make plans, and effectively participate in a variety of fundamental conversations. Furthermore, the course will also assist students in developing an awareness of sociocultural issues which influence Japanese language use. The class provides opportunities for interactive language learning, and a wide variety of methods for Japanese practice through the use of online resources. Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

Late Assessment Penalty
Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, (a) a penalty for lateness will apply – two (2) marks out of 100 will be deducted per day for assignments submitted after the due date – and (b) no assignment will be accepted more than seven (7) days (incl. weekends) after the original submission deadline. No late submissions will be accepted for timed assessments – e.g. quizzes, online tests.

Weekly Workbook
Assessment Type 1: Problem set
Indicative Time on Task 2: 12 hours
Due: Weekly
Weighting: 10%
Students will complete the workbook for each week, check their answers against a model, and then submit the corrected file via iLearn.
On successful completion you will be able to:
- Develop elementary level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Japanese language.
- Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of Japanese at elementary level.
- Demonstrate an awareness of some language and language use in both Japanese and English.
Online Quizzes
Assessment Type 1: Quiz/Test
Indicative Time on Task 2: 10 hours
Due: Weekly
Weighting: 15%
Students complete weekly online quizzes via iLearn, which test them on the content of the week.
On successful completion you will be able to:
- Develop elementary level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Japanese language.
- Identify, describe and evaluate a few aspects of Japanese-speaking cultures and societies.
- Apply relevant language conventions to create meaningful intercultural encounters.
- Demonstrate an awareness of some language and language use in both Japanese and English.
Mid-Semester Speaking Test
Assessment Type 1: Quiz/Test
Indicative Time on Task 2: 1 hours
Due: Week 7
Weighting: 10%
Students will be required to participate in a Japanese conversation over a short time period, and answer any questions that arise during the conversation. This will occur as part of regularly scheduled class time for internal students, and online at scheduled times for other cohorts.
On successful completion you will be able to:
- Develop elementary level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Japanese language.
- Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of Japanese at elementary level.
- Apply relevant language conventions to create meaningful intercultural encounters.
- Demonstrate an awareness of some language and language use in both Japanese and English.
Mid-semester Test
Assessment Type 1: Quiz/Test
Indicative Time on Task 2: 2 hours
Due: Week 7
Weighting: 20%
The mid-semester written test will comprehensively test students on their reading, writing, and listening skills, covering the content of Weeks 1-7. The test is open book, and available online for all students during a set time period.
On successful completion you will be able to:
- Develop elementary level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Japanese language.
- Identify, describe and evaluate a few aspects of Japanese-speaking cultures and societies.
- Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of Japanese at elementary level.
- Demonstrate an awareness of some language and language use in both Japanese and English.
Final Test
Assessment Type 1: Quiz/Test
Indicative Time on Task 2: 2 hours
Due: Week 12
Weighting: 30%
The final test is conducted online, and will comprehensively evaluate students’ Japanese reading, writing, and listening skills, covering the entire content of the course. The test is open book, and available online for all students during a set time period.
On successful completion you will be able to:
- Develop elementary level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Japanese language.
- Identify, describe and evaluate a few aspects of Japanese-speaking cultures and societies.
- Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of Japanese at elementary level.
- Demonstrate an awareness of some language and language use in both Japanese and English.
Final Spoken Performance
Assessment Type 1: Media presentation
Indicative Time on Task 2: 15 hours
Due: Week 13
Weighting: 10%
This task requires students to create, perform, and record a short Japanese dialogue. All students will upload their videos via iLearn.
On successful completion you will be able to:
- Identify, describe and evaluate a few aspects of Japanese-speaking cultures and societies.
- Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of Japanese at elementary level.
- Apply relevant language conventions to create meaningful intercultural encounters.
- Demonstrate an awareness of some language and language use in both Japanese and English.

Students are required to have regular access to a computer and the internet. Mobile devices alone are not sufficient.
For students attending classes on campus we strongly encourage that you bring along your own laptop computer, ready to work with activities in your online unit. The preferred operating system is Windows 10.
Students are required to access the online unit in iLearn by the end of Week 1 and follow any relevant instructions and links for downloads that may be required. If applicable, students are required to download the relevant language package prior to Week 2.
