Unit description Unit description

This is an introductory Russian unit specifically designed for speakers of English who have no prior knowledge of Russian, or Russian background speakers who do not have literacy skills. The unit covers the main concepts of Russian grammar and vocabulary. It develops different functional skills of language usage: speaking, reading, writing and translating from and into Russian.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Develop elementary level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Russian language.
  • ULO2: Identify, describe and evaluate a few aspects of Russian-speaking cultures and societies.
  • ULO3: Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of Russian at elementary level.
  • ULO4: Apply relevant language conventions to create meaningful intercultural encounters.
  • ULO5: Demonstrate an awareness of some language and language use in both Russian and English.

General Assessment Information

Rubrics and indicative samples are provided in iLearn as additional guidance on standards of achievement for different assessment types.

All assessment tasks are compulsory and must be submitted on time. Assignment tasks handed in early will not be marked and returned before the due date.

Late Assessment Penalty

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, (a) a penalty for lateness will apply – two (2) marks out of 100 will be deducted per day for assignments submitted after the due date – and (b) no assignment will be accepted more than seven (7) days (incl. weekends) after the original submission deadline. No late submissions will be accepted for timed assessments – e.g. quizzes, online tests.

The purpose of the test is to check students’ knowledge of all aspects of grammar and vocabulary that they learn throughout the session. This will be a part of regular seminar time.

 


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Develop elementary level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Russian language.
  • Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of Russian at elementary level.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of some language and language use in both Russian and English.

Oral test

Assessment Type 1: Presentation
Indicative Time on Task 2: 0 hours
Due: Week 13
Weighting: 35%

 

For the oral test, students have to prepare a short talk on a topic of their choice. Students will be assessed on their presentation, as well as their ability to answer follow-up questions. This will be a part of regular seminar time and preparation time. Online students will do this via Zoom.

Students have to employ their knowledge and engagement with material explained during session. This will be a part of regular session time and preparation time.

Technology

Students are required to have regular access to a computer and the internet. Mobile devices alone are not sufficient. The preferred operating system is Windows 10.

Students are required to access the online unit in iLearn by the end of Week 1 and follow any relevant instructions and links for downloads that may be required.
