Unit description Unit description

This unit aims to enable students to become independent users of the Greek language. It seeks to develop students' skills in reading, writing, comprehension and speaking in Greek and further develops students' knowledge of Greek culture. The unit aims to develop students' language skills to B1 level in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL).

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Develop intermediate level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in Greek language.
  • ULO2: Identify, describe and evaluate some aspects of Greek-speaking cultures and societies.
  • ULO3: Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of Greek at intermediate level.
  • ULO4: Apply relevant language conventions to create meaningful intercultural encounters.
  • ULO5: Demonstrate a refined awareness of language and language use, in both Greek and English.

Late Assessment Penalty

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, (a) a penalty for lateness will apply – two (2) marks out of 100 will be deducted per day for assignments submitted after the due date – and (b) no assignment will be accepted more than seven (7) days (incl. weekends) after the original submission deadline. No late submissions will be accepted for timed assessments – e.g. quizzes, online tests.

Written Assignment

Assessment Type 1: Reflective Writing
Indicative Time on Task 2: 10 hours
Due: Week 11
Weighting: 15%

Based on cultural concepts discussed in weeks 1-7.


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Identify, describe and evaluate some aspects of Greek-speaking cultures and societies.
  • Apply relevant language conventions to create meaningful intercultural encounters.

Oral Test

Assessment Type 1: Simulation/role play
Indicative Time on Task 2: 10 hours
Due: Week 12
Weighting: 15%

Students are required to prepare a given scenario and act out specific roles appropriately.


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Develop intermediate level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in Greek language.
  • Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of Greek at intermediate level.
  • Apply relevant language conventions to create meaningful intercultural encounters.

Final Test

Assessment Type 1: Quiz/Test
Indicative Time on Task 2: 0 hours
Due: Week 13
Weighting: 40%

This is the final online test and is a comprehensive test of reading and writing skills, covering the content of Weeks 1-12. This will be held as a part of regular seminar time.


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Develop intermediate level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in Greek language.
  • Identify, describe and evaluate some aspects of Greek-speaking cultures and societies.
  • Demonstrate a refined awareness of language and language use, in both Greek and English.

Online Unit

All unit information, weekly recordings, homework, assessment tasks, additional vocabulary, grammar exercises, texts, materials and potential changes to the due dates or classes will be regularly announced and updated on the unit’s iLearn. It is essential to familiarise yourself with access to iLearn as you will on a weekly basis find the homework and the tasks. It is recommended that you visit the page at least twice a week.

Technology

Students are required to have access to a computer and the internet. Mobile devices alone are not sufficient.

Students are required to access the online unit in iLearn by the end of Week 1 and follow any relevant instructions and links for downloads that may be required. If applicable, students are required to download the relevant language package prior to Week 2.

Please contact your course convenor before the end of Week 1 if you do not have a suitable laptop (or tablet) for in-class use.

Unit Schedule

In Seminar 1 students will be introduced to new grammar patterns and vocabulary of Modern Greek language and practice their speaking, listening, reading and writing. In Seminar 2 students will be engaged in Modern Greek texts/ articles with everyday topics and aspects of Greek culture such as family values, literature, environment, film, travelling, food and other.

Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR)

This unit provides learners with the opportunity to work towards language skills at level B1, the third level on the six-level scale of competence laid down in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Through engagement with the Greek language in a range of contexts, the unit invites you to develop the ability to

  • understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc.
  • deal with most situations likely to arise while travelling in an area where the language is spoken.
  • produce simple connected text on topics that are familiar or of personal interest.
  • describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.
