Session 2 Learning and Teaching Update
The decision has been made to conduct study online for the remainder of Session 2 for all units WITHOUT mandatory on-campus learning activities. Exams for Session 2 will also be online where possible to do so.
This is due to the extension of the lockdown orders and to provide certainty around arrangements for the remainder of Session 2. We hope to return to campus beyond Session 2 as soon as it is safe and appropriate to do so.
Some classes/teaching activities cannot be moved online and must be taught on campus. You should already know if you are in one of these classes/teaching activities and your unit convenor will provide you with more information via iLearn. If you want to confirm, see the list of units with mandatory on-campus classes/teaching activities.

Unit description
This unit will improve students' understanding of Japanese grammar, vocabulary, culture, and writing so that they can accomplish a variety of practical and authentic tasks. Students will develop their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills to a level where they can carry out a wide variety of common social interactions, and participate effectively in multiple communicative contexts. Additionally, students will gain basic proficiency in the use of the kanji script, and the ways that standard written Japanese employs kanji, hiragana, and katakana in tandem. The class provides opportunities for interactive language learning, and a wide variety of methods for Japanese practice through the use of online resources. |

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

Late Assessment Penalty
Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, (a) a penalty for lateness will apply – 10 marks out of 100 credit will be deducted per day for assignments submitted after the due date – and (b) no assignment will be accepted seven days (incl. weekends) after the original submission deadline.

Students will complete the workbook for each week, check their answers against a model, and then submit the corrected file via iLearn.

Students complete weekly online quizzes via iLearn, which test them on the content of the week.
On successful completion you will be able to:

- Identify, describe and evaluate some aspects of Japanese-speaking cultures and societies.
- Apply relevant language conventions to create meaningful intercultural encounters.

Mid-Semester Speaking Test
Assessment Type 1: Quiz/Test
Indicative Time on Task 2: 1 hours
Due: 23:59 12/09/2021
Weighting: 10%
Students will be required to participate in a Japanese conversation over a short time period, and answer any questions that arise during the conversation. This will occur as part of regularly scheduled class time for internal students, and via Zoom sessions for external students.
On successful completion you will be able to:
- Develop comprehensive elementary level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Japanese language.
- Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of Japanese at elementary level.
- Apply relevant language conventions to create meaningful intercultural encounters.
- Demonstrate an awareness of some language and language use, in both Japanese and in English.
Online Mid-Semester Test
Assessment Type 1: Quiz/Test
Indicative Time on Task 2: 2 hours
Due: 23:59 19/09/2021
Weighting: 20%
The mid-semester test will comprehensively test students on their reading, writing, and listening skills, covering the content of Weeks 1-7. Test is held online for all students.
On successful completion you will be able to:
- Develop comprehensive elementary level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Japanese language.
- Identify, describe and evaluate some aspects of Japanese-speaking cultures and societies.
- Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of Japanese at elementary level.
- Demonstrate an awareness of some language and language use, in both Japanese and in English.
Final Test

Indicative Time on Task 2: 2 hours

Weighting: 30%
The final test will comprehensively evaluate students’ Japanese reading, listening, and writing skills, covering the entire content of the course. It is held online for all students.

- Identify, describe and evaluate some aspects of Japanese-speaking cultures and societies.
- Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of Japanese at elementary level.

Creative Japanese Performance
Assessment Type 1: Media presentation
Indicative Time on Task 2: 10 hours

Weighting: 10%
This task requires students to create, perform, and record a video in Japanese in relation to a specific prompt. All students upload the final video to iLearn.
On successful completion you will be able to:
- Identify, describe and evaluate some aspects of Japanese-speaking cultures and societies.
- Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of Japanese at elementary level.
- Apply relevant language conventions to create meaningful intercultural encounters.
- Demonstrate an awareness of some language and language use, in both Japanese and in English.
