How does studying the humanities, creative arts and social sciences benefit society? What are their contributions to the fast-evolving world of work? Studying these disciplines will open you to examining the entirety of the human condition and will encourage you to grapple with the complex personal, historical, societal and moral issues ever-present in life. This unit is an interdisciplinary introduction to the main approaches, methods and issues in the study of humanities, creative arts and social sciences, with particular emphasis on the key transferable skills which you will develop in your learning journey through the Bachelor of Arts. Case studies drawn from a variety of disciplines and real-life situations will be employed to illustrate the ways in which the humanities, creative arts and social sciences respond to life by making significant contributions to addressing complex situations - personal and professional. In addition, you will develop essential skills and strategies needed to succeed as a Bachelor of Arts student. These skills will be applicable to each of the subject disciplines that constitute the Bachelor of Arts. The unit will prepare you for the completion of your studies in the final Arts Capstone unit.

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO2: Recognise and advocate for the role of the humanities in the society.
  • ULO3: Appreciate what transferable skills are required to succeed in contemporary life and in the workplace.
  • ULO4: Reflect on their learning and develop learning strategies for their studies across the Bachelor of Arts.

General Assessment Information

Late Submission Penalty

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, (a) a penalty for lateness will apply – two (2) marks out of 100 will be deducted per day for assignments submitted after the due date – and (b) no assignment will be accepted more than seven (7) days (incl. weekends) after the original submission deadline. No late submissions will be accepted for timed assessments – e.g. quizzes, online tests.

Delivery and Resources

This online unit is offered in the form of online activities (quizzes, online discussions, online reflections) complemented by weekly live ( zoom) lectorials, online asynchronous tutorials and online videos and recordings of guest lectures delivered by various academics from across the Faculty of Arts. It is a dynamic online unit, which requires online engagement and participation. Please ensure that you are actively engaged in the online tutorials and attend the weekly lectures ( lectorials). 

All  study resources are provided via the iLearn space. There is no prescribed text.
