Session 2 Learning and Teaching Update
The decision has been made to conduct study online for the remainder of Session 2 for all units WITHOUT mandatory on-campus learning activities. Exams for Session 2 will also be online where possible to do so.
This is due to the extension of the lockdown orders and to provide certainty around arrangements for the remainder of Session 2. We hope to return to campus beyond Session 2 as soon as it is safe and appropriate to do so.
Some classes/teaching activities cannot be moved online and must be taught on campus. You should already know if you are in one of these classes/teaching activities and your unit convenor will provide you with more information via iLearn. If you want to confirm, see the list of units with mandatory on-campus classes/teaching activities.
Visit the MQ COVID-19 information page for more detail.

Unit description |
Unit description
The unit introduces students to the principal areas of international trade law and policy, and in particular examines the legal regime governing the international exchange of goods, services, and intellectual property under the WTO. Topics include the WTO dispute settlement system; rules on non-discrimination; rules on market access; rules on unfair trade; preferential trade agreements. |
Information about important academic dates including deadlines for withdrawing from units are available at https://www.mq.edu.au/study/calendar-of-dates
On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:
Quizzes
Two quizzes of 30 mins each. The quizzes comprise multiple-choice questions that are on the content of the compulsory material covered up to the point of the quiz. Both quizzes are equally weighted.
Hypothetical problem assignment
The assignment involves a hypothetical problem question that tests students on a range of topics covered in this unit. It is designed to mimic the type of cases that international trade lawyers face in practice. More information about the assignment will be provided closer to the date.
Take-Home Exam
The take-home exam can include a range of short answer theoretical and problem questions, covering any topic from the entire semester. The take-home exam is released on the exam date at 9 am and is due by 12 pm on the same day. Late submissions will not be accepted. More information about the take-home exam will be provided closer to the date.
Assessment submissions
The convenor cannot provide extensions for assessments. Any extension request must be made as an Application for a Special Consideration via ask.mq.edu.au and should be accompanied by supporting documentation. Students should refer to the Special Consideration Policy for complete details of the policy and a description of the supporting documentation required. Students with pre-existing health conditions need to register with Student Wellbeing in order to receive reasonable assessment adjustments.
Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved,
(a) a penalty for lateness will apply – 10 marks out of 100 credit will be deducted per day for assignments submitted after the due date – and
(b) no assignment will be accepted seven days (incl. weekends) after the original submission deadline.
No late submissions will be accepted for timed assessments – i.e. quizzes and take-home exams.
Word limits will be strictly applied and work above the word limit will not be marked.
All assessments in the unit are to be submitted electronically. Plagiarism detection software is used in this unit.
Moderation Policy
Detailed marking rubrics will be made available on the iLearn unit page. All Fail papers are double marked.
