Session 2 Learning and Teaching Update

The decision has been made to conduct study online for the remainder of Session 2 for all units WITHOUT mandatory on-campus learning activities. Exams for Session 2 will also be online where possible to do so.

This is due to the extension of the lockdown orders and to provide certainty around arrangements for the remainder of Session 2. We hope to return to campus beyond Session 2 as soon as it is safe and appropriate to do so.

Some classes/teaching activities cannot be moved online and must be taught on campus. You should already know if you are in one of these classes/teaching activities and your unit convenor will provide you with more information via iLearn. If you want to confirm, see the list of units with mandatory on-campus classes/teaching activities.

Unit description Unit description

This unit aims to enable students to become independent users of the Greek language. It provides activities for developing advanced Greek reading, comprehension, writing and speaking skills and provides students with an opportunity to study Greek culture extensively. The unit aims to develop students' language skills towards C1 level in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL).

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Develop comprehensive advanced level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Greek language.
  • ULO2: Identify, describe and evaluate a broad range of aspects of Greek-speaking cultures and societies.
  • ULO3: Identify, evaluate and deploy a broad range of grammatical structures of Greek at advanced level.
  • ULO4: Create meaningful intercultural encounters by applying relevant language conventions.
  • ULO5: Demonstrate a sophisticated awareness of language and language use, in both Greek and in English.

Late Assessment Penalty

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, (a) a penalty for lateness will apply – 10 marks out of 100 credit will be deducted per day for assignments submitted after the due date – and (b) no assignment will be accepted seven days (incl. weekends) after the original submission deadline.

Two online quizzes held as a part of regular class time for both cohorts. External students will complete online.

Students complete a series of mixed tasks including short-essay writing tasks in Greek.

  • Identify, describe and evaluate a broad range of aspects of Greek-speaking cultures and societies.
  • Identify, evaluate and deploy a broad range of grammatical structures of Greek at advanced level.

Media presentation

Assessment Type 1: Media presentation
Indicative Time on Task 2: 3 hours
Due: 09:00-11:00 26/10/21
Weighting: 20%

 

Students are required to present a given topic in Greek, using the contents and skills they have learned in the unit. Students will use online tools as defined on iLearn unit.

 
On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Identify, describe and evaluate a broad range of aspects of Greek-speaking cultures and societies.
  • Identify, evaluate and deploy a broad range of grammatical structures of Greek at advanced level.

Final Test

This is the final online test and is a comprehensive test of reading and writing skills, covering the content of Weeks 1-12.

 
On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Develop comprehensive advanced level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Greek language.
  • Identify, describe and evaluate a broad range of aspects of Greek-speaking cultures and societies.
  • Demonstrate a sophisticated awareness of language and language use, in both Greek and in English.

TECHNOLOGY USED AND REQUIRED

All unit information, weekly recordings, homework, assessment tasks, additional vocabulary, grammar exercises, texts, materials and potential changes to the due dates or classes will be regularly announced and updated on the unit’s iLearn.  It is essential to you familiarise yourself with access to iLearn as you will on a weekly basis find the homework and the tasks. It is recommended that you visit the page at least twice a week.

Technology

Students are required to have access to a computer and the internet. Mobile devices alone are not sufficient.

Students are required to access the online unit in iLearn by the end of Week 1 and follow any relevant instructions and links for downloads that may be required. If applicable, students are required to download the relevant language package prior to Week 2.

Unit Schedule

During the weekly seminar students will be introduced to new grammar patterns and vocabulary of Modern Greek language and practice their speaking, listening, reading and writing and will be engaged in Modern Greek texts/ articles with everyday topics and aspects of Greek culture such as Greek traditions, literature, food, sightseeing etc.

Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR)

This unit aims to enable students to become independent users of the Greek language. It seeks to develop students' skills in reading, writing, comprehension and speaking in Greek at an advanced level and provides students with an opportunity to study Greek culture extensively. The unit aims to bring students' language skills to B2+/ towards C1 level in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL).

Through engagement with the Greek language in a range of contexts, the unit invites you to develop the ability to

  • understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in their field of specialization.
  • interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party.
  • produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.
