2021 – Session 2, Special circumstances
Session 2 Learning and Teaching Update
The decision has been made to conduct study online for the remainder of Session 2 for all units WITHOUT mandatory on-campus learning activities. Exams for Session 2 will also be online where possible to do so.
This is due to the extension of the lockdown orders and to provide certainty around arrangements for the remainder of Session 2. We hope to return to campus beyond Session 2 as soon as it is safe and appropriate to do so.
Some classes/teaching activities cannot be moved online and must be taught on campus. You should already know if you are in one of these classes/teaching activities and your unit convenor will provide you with more information via iLearn. If you want to confirm, see the list of units with mandatory on-campus classes/teaching activities.

Unit description
This introductory German unit is intended for students with a basic knowledge of German, designed to help them reach the equivalent of matriculation / HSC level in the language. The book used in this unit follows a communicative approach, with additional material offered online. The unit includes material on general cultural aspects of life in Germany. It corresponds to the second level (A2) on the six-level scale of competence laid down in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Students with some prior knowledge of German who wish to resume their study of the language in the second half-year should consult the coordinator of the unit. |

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:
- ULO1: Develop comprehensive elementary level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the German language.
- ULO2: Identify, describe and evaluate some aspects of German-speaking cultures and societies.
- ULO3: Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of German at elementary level.
- ULO4: Apply relevant language conventions to create meaningful intercultural encounters.
- ULO5: Demonstrate an awareness of some language and language use, in both German and in English.

Late Assessment Submission Penalty
Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, (a) a penalty for lateness will apply – 10 marks out of 100 credit will be deducted per day for assignments submitted after the due date – and (b) no assignment will be accepted more than 7 days (incl. weekends) after the original submission deadline. No late submissions will be accepted for timed assessments – e.g. quizzes, online tests.

Weighting: 25%
Students complete various short online tests of mixed question types.
On successful completion you will be able to:
- Develop comprehensive elementary level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the German language.
- Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of German at elementary level.
- Demonstrate an awareness of some language and language use, in both German and in English.
Assignments
Assessment Type 1: Participatory task

Due: 4x by Mon 23:59 on 16.8., 30.8., 4.10., 25.10. 2021
Weighting: 20%
Students engage in a variety of low-stakes writing tasks in the target language.
On successful completion you will be able to:
- Develop comprehensive elementary level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the German language.
- Identify, describe and evaluate some aspects of German-speaking cultures and societies.
- Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of German at elementary level.
- Demonstrate an awareness of some language and language use, in both German and in English.
Oral test
Assessment Type 1: Simulation/role play
Indicative Time on Task 2: 0.5 hours
Due: Wk 13 zoom 2.& 5.11. 12:00-1:00; 4.11. 17-18:00
Weighting: 5%
Students are assessed in pairs and engage in a conversation in the target language. Students will complete this task online. See iLearn for more information.
On successful completion you will be able to:
- Identify, describe and evaluate some aspects of German-speaking cultures and societies.
- Apply relevant language conventions to create meaningful intercultural encounters.
Final Online Test
Assessment Type 1: Quiz/Test
Indicative Time on Task 2: 2 hours
Due: Week 13 - opens 5.11. due by 23:59 on 9.11.21
Weighting: 40%
Students complete a variety of mixed-type questions, including one essay-style question. The final test covers the content of the entire unit.
On successful completion you will be able to:

- Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of German at elementary level.
- Demonstrate an awareness of some language and language use, in both German and in English.
