MOLS8001 – Selected Topics in the Molecular Sciences

2021 – Session 2, Special circumstances

Session 2 Learning and Teaching Update

The decision has been made to conduct study online for the remainder of Session 2 for all units WITHOUT mandatory on-campus learning activities. Exams for Session 2 will also be online where possible to do so.

This is due to the extension of the lockdown orders and to provide certainty around arrangements for the remainder of Session 2. We hope to return to campus beyond Session 2 as soon as it is safe and appropriate to do so.

Some classes/teaching activities cannot be moved online and must be taught on campus. You should already know if you are in one of these classes/teaching activities and your unit convenor will provide you with more information via iLearn. If you want to confirm, see the list of units with mandatory on-campus classes/teaching activities.

Visit the MQ COVID-19 information page for more detail.

Delivery and Resources

MOLS8001 Unit structural outline [July 2021]

MOLS8001 is a flexible unit of independent study which can be completed via two different pathways:

  1. The student may be placed into the class of a different unit within the discipline that is not generally part of their programme, and required to complete some or all of that unit’s requirements. This requires prior consultation with the program director and unit convenors to ensure negotiated requirements are completed successfully. Students will be given access to the iLearn site of the alternative unit being attempted.  Students should consult timetables.mq.edu.au and the iLearn site of the alternative unit for details of lectures, other activities, practical classes and assessment tasks.
  2. The student may be required to complete a broad literature review on a particular topic, and submit a draft of a manuscript in a format compatible with submission for publication to a particular journal. This requires prior consultation with an academic supervisor who will aid in design of the literature review topic. There is no set timetable of activities for this offering, as it requires independent study in consultation with the supervisor.

In all cases, the requirements for a 10 credit point unit specify that it should be equivalent to a minimum of 150 hours of work for a student in a semester. The unit will be marked and graded. Students completing the requirements in a different unit will be marked and graded within that cohort. Students completing a literature review will receive a grade based on marking against a rubric is and assessment of all submissions within the cohort by the unit convenor and other designated markers.

If you are enrolled in this unit and do not know which of the two options above you will be doing, please contact your program director and the unit convenor.
