Unit description Unit description

This unit aims to enable students with an existing elementary command of Spanish to become independent users of the Spanish language. It seeks to develop students' skills in reading, writing, comprehension and speaking in Spanish and further develops students' knowledge of contemporary Spanish and Latin American culture. This unit follows a communicative approach and is designed to further develop skills in reading, writing, comprehension and speaking, and requires continuous revision and engaged study from students. The unit aims to develop students' language skills to B1+ level in the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Develop intermediate level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Spanish language.
  • ULO2: Identify, describe and evaluate many aspects of Spanish-speaking cultures and societies.
  • ULO3: Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of Spanish at intermediate level.
  • ULO4: Apply relevant language conventions to create meaningful intercultural encounters.
  • ULO5: Demonstrate a refined awareness of language and language use, in both Spanish and in English.

Late Assessment Penalty

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, (a) a penalty for lateness will apply – two (2) marks out of 100 will be deducted per day for assignments submitted after the due date – and (b) no assignment will be accepted more than seven (7) days (incl. weekends) after the original submission deadline. No late submissions will be accepted for timed assessments – e.g. quizzes, online tests.

Learning log, reflective writing journal and active participation and preparation for unit.

Brief assignments on given topics.

  • Identify, describe and evaluate many aspects of Spanish-speaking cultures and societies.

Regular Quizzes/Final Test

Assessment Type 1: Quiz/Test
Indicative Time on Task 2: 32 hours
Due: Weeks 4, 7, 9, 11, 13
Weighting: 40%

Regular time-limited quizzes and final end of session test including grammar, reading/listening comprehension, written composition.


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Develop intermediate level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Spanish language.
  • Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of Spanish at intermediate level.
  • Demonstrate a refined awareness of language and language use, in both Spanish and in English.

Oral Test

Assessment Type 1: Simulation/role play
Indicative Time on Task 2: 15 hours
Due: Week 13
Weighting: 20%

Semi-prepared semi-improvised group oral test. Online students will be doing this via a Zoom session.


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Develop intermediate level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Spanish language.
  • Apply relevant language conventions to create meaningful intercultural encounters.

Fuentes. Conversación y gramática. Rusch/Domínguez/Caycedo Garner. (2015) Heinle Cengage Learning. 5th ed. (The 2011 4th edition is an acceptable alternative, however please plan ahead of classes to make sure you can locate all relevant sections in your book for that week's activities.)

Technology

Students are required to have regular access to a computer and the internet. Mobile devices alone are not sufficient.

For students attending classes on campus we strongly encourage that you bring along your own laptop computer, ready to work with activities in your online unit. The preferred operating system is Windows 10.

Students are required to access the online unit in iLearn by the end of Week 1 and follow any relevant instructions and links for downloads that may be required. If applicable, students are required to download the relevant language package prior to Week 2.

Please contact your course convenor before the end of Week 1 if you do not have a suitable laptop (or tablet) for in-class use.

Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR)

The unit aims at fostering language skills to level B1, described as follows in the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR): Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. Can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken. Can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest. Can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.
