Unit description Unit description

How are cultural identities created, represented and negotiated within and across cultures via different visual media? This unit provides an overview of a range of visual media, such as film, theatre, performing arts, features in Sydney’s urban environment, visual arts, followed by a deep engagement with specific case studies. Through working with selected examples in different languages and cultures, students will explore key elements of specific media, strategies of visualisation as well as questions of the gaze and modes of viewing, both in culturally specific and intercultural contexts, asking how cultural knowledge is transmitted visually across and within cultures. Lectures will be delivered in English. Tutorials will provide the opportunity to engage with case studies using languages taught at Macquarie University.

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO4: Identify, describe and evaluate how visual texts evolve across languages and cultures.

All assessment tasks are compulsory and must be submitted on time. Tasks handed in early will not be marked and returned before the due date.

Assessment tasks must be uploaded into iLearn.

Late Assessment Penalty

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, (a) a penalty for lateness will apply – two (2) marks out of 100 will be deducted per day for assignments submitted after the due date – and (b) no assignment will be accepted more than seven (7) days (incl. weekends) after the original submission deadline. No late submissions will be accepted for timed assessments – e.g. quizzes, online tests.

Vocabulary toolbox

Assessment Type 1: LOTE written composition

Students create a list of items of vocabulary useful for discussing a particular medium in the language that they are studying. A tool will be made available in iLearn to support the engagement with the items by the entire cohort. Pass/Fail.

Reflexive journal

Assessment Type 1: Reflective Writing

Students write about the visual (re)presentation of cultures in this unit. Further details on iLearn.
On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Identify, describe, evaluate and creatively communicate ways in which society and culture interact and locally manifest in visual forms.
  • Identify, evaluate and deploy a broad range of theoretical and linguistic interpretations of intercultural visual texts mobilising language(s) other than English
  • Identify, describe and evaluate how visual texts evolve across languages and cultures.

Informed contributions to the discussion forum

Presentation planning: presentation script

Assessment Type 1: Design Task
Indicative Time on Task 2: 30 hours
Due: Week 9
Weighting: 40%

Students make an informed argument to an outside stakeholder to encourage engagement with a particular visual medium (e.g. for inclusion in the secondary school curriculum, as part of a corporate event or in a public event at the local library). Students aim to effectively explain to their audience how the chosen medium transmits cultural knowledge across and within cultures and how the audience could benefit from this cultural knowledge. Students are encouraged to include a creative component that relates to the specific medium they are arguing for and to include the language they are studying in a creative way.
On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Demonstrate sophisticated skills in the language(s) studied at Macquarie University by evaluating and discussing written and spoken information in authentic sources
  • Identify, describe, evaluate and creatively communicate ways in which society and culture interact and locally manifest in visual forms.
  • Identify, evaluate and deploy a broad range of theoretical and linguistic interpretations of intercultural visual texts mobilising language(s) other than English
  • Identify, describe and evaluate how visual texts evolve across languages and cultures.

Presentations

Assessment Type 1: Media presentation
Indicative Time on Task 2: 15 hours

Weighting: 20%

Students deliver a presentation focusing on an effective communication skills, and provide feedback to the presentations of their peers.
On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Demonstrate sophisticated skills in the language(s) studied at Macquarie University by evaluating and discussing written and spoken information in authentic sources
  • Identify, describe, evaluate and creatively communicate ways in which society and culture interact and locally manifest in visual forms.
  • Identify, evaluate and deploy a broad range of theoretical and linguistic interpretations of intercultural visual texts mobilising language(s) other than English
  • Identify, describe and evaluate how visual texts evolve across languages and cultures.

Students are required to have regular access to a computer and the internet. Mobile devices alone are not sufficient.

For students attending classes on campus we strongly encourage that you bring along your own laptop computer, ready to work with activities in your online unit. The preferred operating system is Windows 10.
